The Cylinder Code
Chapter 13: The Cylinder Code
The next morning, pale golden sunlight filtered through the small gaps in the iron shutters. The five friends reassembled around the coffee table, a renewed sense of unity filling the room.
“The cylinder needs a four-letter combination," Ethan explained, holding up the heavy silver casing. “Letters A through Z on each dial."
“J-A-C-K?" Ali guessed. “For the headmaster’s first name?"
“No," Lily said softly, taking the cylinder into her hands. Her sweet face was calm and focused now. “When I was living at the orphanage before St. Jude’s, I had a silver locket with four letters carved into the back. My guardians told me it was the only thing found in my crib."
She slowly rotated the dials, the mechanical pins clicking smoothly into place: E - L - L - A.
With a soft pneumatic hiss, the cylinder popped open.
Inside lay a high-tech encrypted memory drive and an obsidian keycard stamped with a stylized logo—not of St. Jude’s Academy, but of Vance Oceanic Research, a facility located just three miles down the coastal highway.
“He didn’t just disappear into hiding," Lily realized, holding the keycard up to the light. “My father was running a research lab right here on the coast."
