CELESTIAL GLOW
ALAIN T. BRUNNER
A BENCH BY A RIVER
Sometimes a breach appears in the heavens, through which a beautiful radiance streams, spreading across the earth as a gentle, beautiful, and soothing light. Few notice this act of providence, this blessing from the stars, which, when it reaches the heart, bestows upon it a sense of tenderness. This glow is grace; it is harmony. I do not know if it is always present, or if it emanates from the whims of a few gods.
When it prevents the powerful arm of the executioner, wielding an axe, from striking down the victim, it is called mercy.
When it touches the soul of justice, it is called clemency.
Those whose hearts are dark, even when they catch a glimpse of it, turn away from it to pursue their vain destinies.
Even good souls ignore it, though it is so present before them. Their resignation hinders their hopes.
When it touches the hearts of two lovers, it renews this eternal miracle. Sunsets on the horizon become splendors, flowers become wonders, and birdsong becomes odes for the passionate. Their love is more powerful than the crown of kings, more virtuous than clemency. It is that breeze coming from the heavens; it is born of the tenderness that has endured through the centuries. It is that sweet music that flows from the heart of the beloved. It cannot be bought or sold; it is an incomparable gift, light and imperceptible. Only the lover sees it—with his heart.
By a stroke of fortune that reason could not conceive, this beautiful radiance illuminated a solitary bench beside a small river.
