Chapter 1

PART ONE: THE FIRST ENCOUNTER

CHAPTER 1: A NEW BEGINNING

AMARA'S POV

The sound of my alarm woke me up at exactly 5:30 a.m.

I slowly opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling.

"Today is the day," I whispered.

It was my first day at Lagos Metropolitan University, and I couldn't decide whether I was excited or nervous.

"Amara! Are you still sleeping?" my mother's voice came from outside.

"I'm awake, Mum!" I shouted.

I quickly got out of bed and rushed to the bathroom.

After taking my bath, I wore my favourite blue jeans, a white top and my sneakers. I packed my books into my bag, checked my phone and hurried downstairs.

My mother was already in the kitchen.

"Good morning, Mum."

"Good morning, my daughter. Are you ready for your first day?"

I smiled. "I think so."

She placed a plate of bread and eggs in front of me.

"Eat properly. Don't allow anybody to intimidate you because of where you come from."

I looked at her and smiled.

"I won't, Mum."

After breakfast, I collected my bag and headed outside.

The journey to school was longer than I expected. Lagos traffic was already doing what it knew how to do best.

By the time I arrived, students were moving around the campus in different directions.

Some were laughing, others were taking pictures, while a few stood in groups discussing.

I took a deep breath.

"Okay, Amara. You can do this."

I checked my phone for the direction to my department and started walking.

Unfortunately, I was so busy looking at the map that I didn't notice someone standing in front of me.

BAM!

My books fell to the ground.

"Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry!" I quickly bent down to pick them up.

"Can't you watch where you're going?"

I paused.

That voice.

I slowly looked up.

Standing in front of me was a tall, handsome young man wearing a black shirt and expensive wristwatch. His face showed absolutely no sign of friendliness.

"I'm sorry. I didn't see you," I explained.

He looked at me briefly before checking his phone.

"Clearly."

I stared at him.

Excuse me?

"Well, I already apologised," I replied.

He picked up one of my books, glanced at its cover and handed it back.

"Try paying attention next time."

Before I could respond, he walked away.

I watched him disappear into the crowd.

"Who does he think he is?" I muttered.

"Wow! First day and you're already fighting with somebody?"

I turned around.

A girl with beautiful braids stood behind me, smiling.

I sighed.

"Please don't remind me."

She laughed.

"I'm Tara, by the way."

"Amara."

"Nice to meet you, Amara. Now, come on. We might be in the same department."

For the first time that morning, I smiled.

Maybe my day wasn't going to be so bad after all.

But I had no idea that the rude boy in the black shirt would soon become a very important part of my university life.

DANIEL'S POV

I walked towards my car while scrolling through my phone.

My friend Michael was already waiting.

"Bro! What took you so long?"

"Nothing."

He looked at me suspiciously.

"Why do you look annoyed?"

"Some girl bumped into me."

Michael burst into laughter.

"Seriously? That's what ruined your morning?"

"Can you just drive?"

He shook his head and entered the car.

I leaned back against the seat, completely unaware that the girl I had just walked away from would soon turn my world upside down.
