Chapter 1 My New Apartment

The digital clock in the bottom corner of my laptop screen glowed a mocking 12:14 AM.

Outside, the rain had settled into a steady, miserable drumbeat against the leaded windowpanes of Apartment 401, casting long, writhing shadows across the peeling floral wallpaper.

This place is an ancient, gothic-boned relic of a building that smelled faintly of old cedar and rain-soaked stone was supposed to be my sanctuary.

A hard-earned fortress bought with the meager savings I had left after clawing my way out of a dead marriage and a husband who had tried to hollow me out.

I had traded one cage for freedom, and the absolute best part of it was Adrian. Just down the dimly lit hallway, through the heavy silence of Apartment 402, was the man who had helped me carry my boxes, the man whose hands knew every curve of my waist, and whose warm and clean skin anchored me whenever my chest felt too tight to breathe.

I tucked a stray strand of long, unruly black hair behind my ear, my messy bun threatening to collapse entirely as I sat cross-legged on the faded velvet sofa.

I was wearing one of Adrianโ€™s oversized cotton T-shirts, the worn black one that swallowed me whole, falling mid-thigh and a pair of soft cotton shorts. Against my bare skin, the delicate metal links of the waist chain Adrian had gifted me felt cool, a subtle, sensual reminder of his hands lingering even when he wasn't touching me.

My fingers flew across the keyboard, typing furiously to finish a freelance project. I needed to block out the oppressive night noise, the groaning timber of the building, and the phantom weight of my past.

Everything felt safe. Until it shattered.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

My hands froze over the keys. My breath hitched, trapping itself painfully in my throat.

It wasn't a heavy, vibrating knock that shook the frame. It was sharper, lighter, the chilling, deliberate sound of a fingernail flicking rhythmically against the dark mahogany wood of my front door.

Who the hell is out there at this hour?

Panic didn't creep in; it lunged. My doe eyes widened, the rapid fluttering of my thick lashes betraying the sudden spike of adrenaline in my veins. There were no children in this decaying building, and delivery men didn't crawl up these creaking stairwells past midnight.

For a second, my mind screamed ex-husband, flashing back to the suffocating paranoia of my marriage, but I had locked that door. I had locked everything away.

Curiosity, that stubborn, self-destructive streak that always got me into trouble, pulled me off the couch. My bare feet padded silently across the hardwood floor. The hallway outside my living room was pitch black, swallowing the pale yellow glow leaking from the ceiling fixture.

I reached the front door, my heart hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against my ribs. Trembling, I pressed my eye to the brass peephole.

The fisheye lens distorted the narrow corridor outside, stretching the peeling wallpaper and the dingy runner rug into a warped tunnel of absolute, empty yellow-lit nothingness. No shadow. No shifting silhouette. Just the sickly glow of the wall sconce humming softly in the damp air.

A shaky breath shuddered past my lips. God, Elena, you're losing your mind.

I let out a harsh, self-deprecating sigh, muttering a string of angry curses at my own frayed nerves. It must have been the wind playing tricks on the old metal fixtures, or maybe a stray branch whipping against the exterior brick.

Reassured by my own logical excuse and desperately needing to believe it. I turned my back on the door and retreated to the safety of my living room couch, picking up right where I left off.

Five minutes. Exactly five minutes of desperate, frantic typing later, it happened again.

Scrape. Scratch. Tap.

Three sharp, deliberate rakes against the wood, heavier this time, like long nails dragging down the grain.

Rage immediately eclipsed the ice in my veins. I scrambled off the couch, my bare legs tangling in the hem of Adrianโ€™s oversized shirt, and stormed across the apartment. I threw myself against the door, my fist slamming hard against the interior panel.

"Who's there?!" I demanded, my voice cracking with a mix of fury and raw, exposed terror. "If this is some kind of sick joke, I swear to Godโ€”"

Silence. Absolute, suffocating silence pressed back against the wood.

I pressed my eye to the peephole again, my breath fogging the brass. Still nothing. The hallway was empty, bathed in that same eerie, flickering yellow light. A hot wave of humiliation and anger flushed my cheeks.

Adrian.

It had to be him. It was completely characteristic of his teasing, possessive streak to sneak down here, tap on my door just to watch me unravel, and then slip away into the shadows to laugh at my expense. He loved how easily I flinched, how dramatically my emotions flared up.

Fuming, I snatched my phone off the coffee table, my thumbs flying across the screen in a blur of angry text bubbles.

To Adrian: Stop playing your stupid midnight games at my door before I take a bat to your head. I'm not in the mood, Blackwood. ๐Ÿ’€

With a dramatic huff, I tossed the phone hard onto the cushions, watching it bounce before sliding into the velvet folds. I stalked back to my laptop, shoved a pair of heavy noise-canceling headphones over my ears, and cranked the volume up, sealing myself inside a wall of pulsing bass. Idiot, I muttered to myself, glaring at the dark screen. Next-door tormentor.

The morning after the midnight knocks had passed in a foggy haze of exhaustion and twitchy nerves, but the following evening brought a breathless, desperate reprieve.

The heavy clicking of a key turning in the lock of Apartment 401 cut through the silence. My heart did a sudden, familiar flutter as the heavy oak door swung open, revealing Adrian.

He stood in the doorway, his broad frame nearly filling it, looking utterly edible with his deep brown hair effortlessly messy, falling over his forehead, and his sharp jaw shadow-stubbled from a long day.

He brought with him the warm, grounding scent of his familiar vanilla-and-wood cologne, instantly flushing out the cold, stagnant air of the apartment.

Before I could even speak, Adrian shut the door behind him, locked it with a swift flick of his wrist, and closed the distance between us in three long, predatory strides.

"God, I missed you," he growled low in his throat.

His strong arms wrapped around my narrow waist, hauling me flush against his hard chest until there wasn't a single millimeter of air between us.

He wasted no time. His mouth slammed onto mine in a kiss that was hungry, deep, and bruising, instantly stealing the breath straight from my lungs.

I melted against him, my hands instinctively tangling into the soft waves of his hair, pulling him closer as his tongue parted my lips, devouring me with a possessive heat that set my blood on fire.

In seconds, the floor became our destination.

Jackets and shirts hit the dark hardwood in a chaotic heap. My curvy figure was pressed flat against the cool floor, but I barely felt it under the scorching weight of Adrianโ€™s body pinning me down.

He was relentless, his muscular frame hovering over mine, his eyes dark with a desperate, touch-starved hunger that always made my core ache.

"You have no idea how much I wanted to be inside you all day," he mumbled against the sensitive skin beneath my ear, his stubble scraping deliciously over my throat.

His large, warm hands slid beneath my shirt, trailing fire up my ribs, gripping my waist tightly while his thumb teased the delicate metal links of my waist chain, pressing it against my feverish skin. "You look so damn good tonight, Elena."

My head fell back, a soft, helpless gasp escaping my lips as his mouth mapped its way down my collarbone. But as his fingers tugged at the waistband of my shorts, the memory of the midnight horror suddenly cracked through my clouded mind like ice water. The tapping. The scraping. The hollow silence.

Panic flared hot in my veins.

"Adrian, waitโ€”stop," I gasped out, my chest heaving violently against his. I placed both hands against his broad, bare shoulders, applying just enough pressure to break the scorching kiss.

Adrian paused, his deep brown eyes heavy-lidded and confused, blinking down at me as he caught his breath. "What is it, baby? Did I hurt you?"

"Where were you last night?" I demanded, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound stern. My doe eyes searched his face, looking for any glint of playfulness, any sign that he was hiding a tease. "Around midnight. Were you outside my door?"

Adrian frowned, a look of genuine baffle washing over his sharp features. "Last night? Babe, I was trapped at the office until nearly three in the morning pulling that emergency double shift. I didn't even get to check my phone until I woke up this afternoon"

The room seemed to tilt. The blood drained completely from my face, leaving my skin icy cold.

He wasn't here.

"You're lying," I whispered, my breathing turning rapid, shallow, and panicked. "Adrian, don't joke with me. Someone was tapping on my door. Three times. I texted you! I thought it was you playing your stupid, possessive games!"

Seeing the raw terror flooding my eyes, Adrianโ€™s expression softened into that carefree, easygoing smirk he always wore when he wanted to melt my dramatic edges away. He leaned down, pressing a gentle, reassuring kiss to the tip of my nose.

"Hey, calm down, crazy girl," he hummed smoothly, his thumb stroking my cheekbone. "Itโ€™s an old building. The wind blows through that hallway draft like crazy. It was probably just the looseness in the metal doorframe vibrating against the wood. You know how jumpy you get when you work late."

I swallowed hard, looking into his warm, steady eyes. Every instinct inside me screamed that a fingernail tapping against mahogany didn't sound like wind. A cold knot settled deep in the pit of my stomach.

But God, I was so tired of being afraid. I desperately wanted to believe him. I needed his logic to be right, if only so I could sleep tonight.

"You really think it was just the draft?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper, looking up at him like he was my only anchor in the dark.

"I know it was," he promised, his tone shifting back to that intoxicating, dominant purr as he leaned down to trap my gaze. "And even if it wasn't, I'm here now. Nobody gets past me to touch what's mine."

He hushed my lingering worries with a deep, authoritative "Shhh," his mouth sliding back over mine to devour my protest before it could form. He left a hot, possessive mark on the curve of my neck, sucking the sensitive skin until I whimpered, before his large hands slid down the soft curve of my bare thighs, parting them and pulling my hips flush against his hardened length.

My moans filled the room, completely effectively muffled against his lips, as he drowned out my fear in an ocean of dark, intoxicating heat.

The darkness of Apartment 401 felt heavy, suffocating, and entirely different from the cozy warmth Adrian had left behind.

Sometime deep into the nightโ€”long after he had kissed me one last time, whispered lazy promises against my mouth, and slipped back down the dim hallway to his own apartment. I woke up with a parched throat and a restless, aching body.

I shifted in the tangled sheets, shivering slightly in the dark. My skin throbbed with a dull, heated ache, marked everywhere by Adrianโ€™s possessive teeth and hands, bruised purples and tender reds painted across my collarbones, the swells of my breasts, and the delicate skin of my inner thighs.

I cursed myself under my breath, my muscles sore and heavy as I tried to untangle my legs from the bedding. Moving was an effort. Every joint felt sluggish, weighed down by hours of intense, breathless pleasure.

Needing water to cool the dry heat burning in my chest, I finally dragged myself out of bed, pulling one of Adrianโ€™s discarded button-downs over my bare shoulders. My bare feet padded softly against the cold hardwood of the hallway as I made my way toward the kitchen.

And then, I froze.

A heavy, dragging sound scraped against the exterior wall outside my front door. It sounded sickeningly thick and slow, like a heavy, wet winter coat sliding heavily down the dark wallpaper, or bare, damp limbs dragging across the concrete floor.

Adrianโ€™s voice echoed instantly in the back of my mind: โ€œIt was probably just the looseness in the metal doorframe... Donโ€™t open it unless itโ€™s me.โ€

Logic told me to walk away. To turn around, go back to bed, pull the blankets over my head, and pretend the building was just settling.

But panic and an agonizing, reckless curiosity paralyzed my feet. What could possibly go wrong by just looking? My heart hammered a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs as I inched forward, drawn toward the heavy mahogany door like a moth to a flame.

I tiptoed, hoisting myself up high on my bare toes to reach the high brass peephole. Pressing my eye tight against the cold, icy ring, I held my breath.

The fisheye lens warped the hallway view into an eerie, amber-lit fishbowl. I saw the opposite door of Apartment 402, the peeling, water-stained floral wallpaper, and the worn wooden floorboards.

And then my gaze dropped downward. My breath caught in my throat, turning into a sharp, choking gasp.

My welcome mat. The thick, coir-fiber welcome mat that always sat flat outside my threshold had been moved. More than that, it was folded cleanly in half. Perfectly. The coarse bristles were pressed tightly against each other, forming a neat, symmetrical crease right in the center of my doorway.

A cold wave of absolute horror washed over me from head to toe.

Someone had been standing right there. Someone had deliberately bent down, placed their hands on my mat, and folded it with terrifying precision while I sat defenseless mere inches away on the other side of the wood.

Yet, throughout the entire night, I hadnโ€™t heard a single footstep approach. No creaking floorboards. No retreating steps. Just absolute, predatory silence.

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, the rapid thumping so loud I was certain whoever was out there could hear it. My breath fogged the inner glass of the brass lens, blurring my vision.

The realization struck me with a spine-chilling, suffocating certainty: whatever was waiting in that hallway wasnโ€™t the wind. It wasnโ€™t a draft. It was playing a calculated, deeply intimate game with my sanity, creeping closer and closer to my threshold.

Before I could tear my eye away, before I could scream or stumble backward, it happened.

A low, wet, whistling exhalation breathed directly against the exterior peephole.

I watched in sheer, unadulterated terror as the moisture from that unseen breath instantly frosted my side of the metal ring, turning the brass ice-cold against my skin. And then, cutting through the heavy silence of the night, a voice slithered through the solid woodโ€”clear, uncomfortably calm, and entirely too close to my ear.

"Well... well... well... A new pretty woman. Sounds fun..."

A low, raspy chuckle scraped through the door, dark and mocking.

The words struck my chest like a physical blade, a sharp, rusted knife plunging straight into my heart. My legs gave out beneath me, the breath completely vanishing from my lungs as the horror of the dark, gothic building closed in to crush me alive.
