Chapter 1

EDITED**

Tumult.

I woke with a start. Barren streets wallow in self-pity on a persistent loop through the opaque sheet of glass. White noise conjures a stoic attitude upon my grasp of normalcy. And the bus halts...

I'm free...

One step. Engulfed. Animosity swallows me in the night's eminence, blinding me. The dead of twilight. I stand there being defiled by the harsh winds against my skin, fresh bruises arise on my face from the bitter gusts of cold wind. Scattered across my body like dot-to-dot, just without the joyous feeling when the picture is complete. Instead I feel the victorious inferno of painful liberation.

The harrowing streets look as dark as the torturous maze in my mind, making my way to the small, run down diner. Letters flash lazily above the door in an almost irritating pattern "...OB'... IN...R."

I open the door stiffly, the warm aroma of home-cooked food makes my stomach growl in anticipation. Wrapping my tattered hoodie closer to my body as I awkwardly sit it in the booth. A tall middle aged lady with honey coloured hair walks to my aid, " Hello there darlin' my name is Tammy and I'll be your server today? What can I get'cha sweetness?" Her southern accent brings a foreign mothering comfort, I decided to go for a small order of pancakes- a newfound luxury to me. I pull out my small pad and write down my order, with a startled gasp at this sudden revelation she smiles kindly, with a flash of sympathy in her eyes. I watch her waddle off to the service hatch, pad in hand.

I idly sat there and watched the trees sway almost rhythmically, coming to this quick conclusion why the town is named 'Meadow Falls'. Fleeting. A large pack of distorted shadows disrupt the forests ambience: beast-like appearance, dark, swift and mysteriou- SMACK! With a flinch I'm broken from my pondering thoughts by the arrival of a plate, a curious glower bestows my face as I gaze upon Tammy smiling sheepishly, I shift my gaze back to the now desolate forest with one question in mind...
