Prologue
♡☆♡☆Ten years ago♡☆♡☆
"Promise me you'll wait for me."
Gwen stared at Coal through the tears blurring her vision, terrified that if she blinked, he would already be gone.
He stood before her with one hand wrapped around hers. His suitcase rested at his side, packed for a future thousands of miles away—a future that seemed to have no place for her in it.
"I'll wait," she whispered.
The words barely left her lips.
Coal smiled.
That smile.
The one she had spent years pretending to hate because admitting how much she loved it would have meant admitting how completely he had captured her heart.
The same boy who had annoyed her on the first day of school had somehow become the person she couldn't imagine living without.
"Good," he whispered. "Because I'm coming back for you."
Gwen wanted to believe him.
She wanted to cling to those words, to the warmth of his hand, to the promise trembling between them.
But something deep inside her already knew this goodbye was different.
Not goodbye for now.
Goodbye to everything they had been.
Coal leaned closer and rested his forehead against hers.
"You're my girl, Gwen."
She closed her eyes, holding on to him as though love alone could keep him from leaving.
For one fragile, foolish moment, she let herself believe that nothing could destroy what they had.
Not distance.
Not money.
Not his family.
Not time.
Nothing.
Then Coal kissed her forehead, picked up his suitcase, and walked away.
He didn't look back.
Gwen watched until he disappeared from sight, until the last trace of him was swallowed by the road and the silence he left behind.
Only then did she place a trembling hand over her stomach.
There was something she needed to tell him.
Something that would change both their lives forever.
Something that should have made him stay.
But she never got the chance.
Because sometimes, the greatest secrets aren't the ones we choose to keep.
Sometimes…
They're the ones someone else chooses to keep from us.
And ten years later, when Coal Blackheart walked back into Gwen's life, he had no idea that the girl he had left behind was no longer alone.
He had no idea that two children carried his blood.
And he certainly had no idea that the woman standing beside Gwen was no longer waiting for him.
She was wearing another man's ring.
A ring forged from ten years of silence, sacrifice, and secrets.
The past had finally returned.
But it hadn't come back to heal old wounds.
It had come back to tear them open.
And this time…
It wasn't leaving quietly.
