Prologue
The soft, orange glow in the distance was not what it seemed, that much I knew from a feeling of dread that had washed over me. Despite dreading what was happening, I kept going towards it, curiosity overpowering the fear. As I got closer, I could smell the smoke and hear the screams of people burning alive. “Dragonfire,” I said to myself in shock. I found myself now sprinting towards it, desperately wanting to see if my friends and family were still alive. I ran until I was on top of a hill looking down on what I figured used to have been my village, but it was hard to tell since everything was on fire. Overhead, I saw the outline of a black dragon circling high above. Anger rose within me, and I took to the skies to confront him.
I gasped as my eyes shot open. “What an odd dream,” I mumbled to myself as I went to rub my head. That’s when I realized I was on top of the hill overlooking my village.
“Ugh, I’m gonna start tying myself down while I sleep so I stop sleepwalking.”
I turned around and saw a tail…my tail! I jumped and looked at my hands, or rather dragon claws and I now felt wings on my back. “I-I’m a…dragon? How!? Why!?” I exclaimed as I spun around, freaking out. Then suddenly, I felt a sharp pain and watched as I somehow changed back into my normal human self.
What in the world just happened? Mom will know what to do.
I ran back home and woke up my mom, careful not to wake my dad because he hated dragons and if he found out I turned into a dragon, he would call me crazy. At least I know my mom likes dragons and will tell me I’m crazy in a gentle way. We went out in the living room together and I told her what happened, keeping my voice low.
“I was wondering when this day would come. Tomorrow morning, go talk to your grandmother. She’ll explain everything to you. You are part of something that could one day change the world,” mom said before standing. I had even more questions now, but I knew she needed to get back to sleep. So, I followed her back down the hall and went to my own room. I fell asleep, only empty darkness filling my mind this time.
