Maverick Family Meeting

Father called out to us for a sudden meeting several days ago. By the tone of his voice, I knew something was up. Why? He never called me since I was no longer involved with his company’s legal team. And second, I saw Maddox—my older brother—in the hallway with his face covered with scars and bandages. It was no surprise because he always got into fights somehow. But what made it different; this time was that he was in a full suit with his hair slicked back. Maddox never wore a suit or got his messy hair done, let alone attended a vital family meeting.

What kind of hell awaited me?

Once father, Dove, Maddox, and I sat on our chairs, father cleared his throat and looked at us one by one. I felt uneasy but tried my best to remain composed. What could warrant this meeting?

“I wanted to thank each of you for caring for each other in the recent years,” he began. His eyes fell upon Maddox, and Maddox stared right back. It seemed like an unspoken conversation between the pair had just started.

So it was Maddox. He might have fucked up again this time. How could I not see that coming, I muttered to myself.

However, Dove wasn’t the most tolerable sibling, so his initial response after knowing what was going on was to throw the clutters in his hands onto the dining table with teeth clenching. I flinched but wasn’t surprised. This was to be expected out of every family meeting we ever had.

“Now,” Dove said, leaning forward in his seat, resting his arms atop the table. “Let’s talk about what happened.”

That was enough to make the air around us change dramatically. Our father’s face morphed into a grimace. Maddox shifted slightly in his chair, and the tension was high. No one spoke another word until Maddox spoke up.

“It’s my fault.”

Silence once again settled over us as Maddox began his explanations.

As his ex-attorney, my gut feeling was telling me this conversation was about to take a turn for the worse. So I gave him a suspicious look. “What have you done?”

He sighed. “I got into a fight, but it’s not what you’re thinking.”

“Really? Because you’re not exactly looking the good guy here.”

“Well,” Maddox said, shifting uncomfortably. “The guy who I fought with is my ex.”

Dove’s brows rose. “Your ex? Wow, look who now knows how to commit instead of getting random Omegas pregnant.”

Maddox’s face reddened as he was about to shout, but Father came in before he did, cutting him off.

“Alright,” Father said. “Explain.”

Maddox swallowed hard before starting, “So there were these thieves that have been stealing from one of our clubs. They stole limited edition supplies, even offered VIP rooms for non-alpha customers while covering their pheromones using illegal drugs. I did my digging to find the perps, but turned out it wasn’t only happening in one of the club, but every single of our club in three different cities. So my investigators—”

“Why haven’t I heard about any of this?!” Father yelled, losing his calm demeanor little by little.

In sheer panic, Maddox quickly explained, “You weren’t notified because it was classified information, and the police were unable to find any evidence against anyone.”

Dove smirked before continuing, “So, you guys decided to start your own gang to catch the perp of these thefts?”

“Something like that.” Maddox scratched the nape of his neck.

My father glared into Maddox. “Why?”

“The police are slow, Father. I tried paying them off, but most refused. I guess we can’t always rely on our pay list.”

“That’s because you have too many criminal records.” Dove scoffed. “Anyone who would take on your case would only tint their track record.”

Maddox laughed sarcastically. “Why are you acting as if you’re such a saint?”

“Because unlike you,” Dove replied, pointing his index finger towards Maddox, “I’m not stupid. I know how to get shit done and I never fuck up. But guess who does a lot? You. You spoiled little—”

Father interjected, “Enough! Stop squabbling!”

Dove and Maddox both shot each other glares before they looked down.

“Continue,” Dad ordered.

Maddox gulped. “So anyway, I started a group to help catch these criminals. There are five people currently under investigation.”

“And what did they find?” I asked, intrigued by the whole ordeal.

Our family had been known to be one of the most notorious Alpha families in the city. Those who wanted to mess with us might have been pretty nuts themselves, so I couldn’t help but feel invested in the story.

“After I received some information regarding their location and their motives, I went out and took them down. And that’s how I found out... the head of this criminal operation was the older brother of one of my exes.”

“What’s the matter, then?” Dove gave Maddox a mocking smile. “You got all emotional because of that? You couldn’t catch em ’cause your pants told you not to?”

This time Maddox lost it. He stood up and grabbed Dove by the neck, throwing him across the room, where he landed with a loud thud.

“YOU FUCKING MONSTER!!” Maddox screamed ae tried punching his older brother, while Dove dodged every one of his strikes easily. His rebuttal—a kick in the stomach—sent Maddox flying onto the glass dining table, shattering everything he landed on. The commotion has attracted the attention of the maids and servants watching the fight through the door.

I was still sitting there, with a spoon and a fork in my hand, despite the table in front of me having been completely broken. Alphas’ fight, indeed, was a fucking nightmare.

Maddox growled loudly. “You fucking piece of shit!!!!” He wanted to march towards Dove, but his phone rang loudly. He snatched his phone from his pocket, answered it, and shouted to the speaker, “Yes! Yes! Yes! I’m here!”

Without excusing himself, he exited the dining room with blood dripping from his forehead. He didn’t seem to care. Alphas tended to have high pain tolerance, and Moddox had proven this over and over again throughout his life. As far as I know him as a brother, he would always cause a mess, and I would be the one to protect him legally so that he didn’t tint our family’s name. So I suspected this time it was no different.

Patting the food crumbs off my pants as I stood up, I looked at Father. I noticed he, too, was staring at Maddox as he left the room, his eyes showing equal amounts of disappointment, concern, and sadness. For a moment, I wondered whether or not he cared. Probably not.

With a stern expression, he stared back at me. “Lance,” he called my name softly.

“Yeah?” I responded quietly, looking up at him, knowing where this would go eventually.

He nodded. “Take care of him. He’s a fool when it comes to things like these. Just make sure he doesn’t do anything reckless that could possibly worsen the situation.” Father exited the room while giving himself a little temple message, seemingly frustrated with how this dinner turned out.

“Oh, look at this cute view. The lap dog came to the rescue whenever its owner fucks up.” Dove walked past me, giving me a sarcastic grin. I glared at him but didn’t say a word. After spending all my life being the youngest brother in this family, I knew better than to be worked up by anything that Dove was saying. This asshole wasn’t woI wouldn’t waste energy and precious words on him.

He chuckled, shaking his head. “Come on, Lance, don’t look at me like that,” he continued. “We are brothers, remember? If Maddox gets hurt, I’ll be responsible.”

“Obviously.” I scoffed. “You’d anything that it takes to protect the prestige of the company. What would the public think if the brother of the CEO gets caught assaulting people?”

He gave me a mischievous grin. “Now that you’ve been away a while, you finally understand how the world works.”

“I know how YOU work,” I emphasized. “You only care about covering every misdemeanour Maddox committed so that it won’t tint your reputation. You’re just like Father.”

Without waiting for a response, I stood up and left.

I needed to find where the fuck Maddox was and get this thing over with.
