The Chicken and The Dragon

Once Upon a Time, a mother dragon sat atop her eggs. Poppa dragon had gone to hunt, coming back with nothing but a feather. He told momma dragon that he couldn’t kill the chicken because she had eggs of her own. Poppa dragon had told the chicken about his eggs, and she sent him off with a feather from her body. She had also told him that he should place the feather beneath one of their eggs.

Now, when momma dragon heard this she was upset and frowned. But none the less, she placed the feather under her smallest egg and went to bed hungry.

The next day, when momma dragon woke up she found that the feather was nowhere to be seen. Poppa dragon, sad, went to the mother chicken again. This time the chicken sent him off with a feather and some berries to eat. Upon arrival momma dragon placed the egg over the feather and they ate berries for supper.

That night momma dragon dreamed of her tiny baby dragons, however one was smaller than the rest.

The next morning the feather was gone again. After telling poppa dragon, he set off to see the chicken again. This time the chicken smiled and said

“My chicks will hatch soon.” She pointed towards her eggs that were now slightly moving. Now poppa dragon received another feather, that was black, along with a feather-full of berries.

This went on for one whole week. After the seventh day momma dragon felt her eggs begin to move. First, the biggest egg cracked open and a purple dragon stepped out smiling. The second egg was slightly smaller and contained a small, sad, blue, dragon. Her last, but not least dragon egg, no bigger than a chicken egg, cracked open. However instead of being punched open, it was pecked open. Egg shell shattered and out came a little black chicken, and as it came out it sneezed a little puff of fire. Momma dragon was surprised, but still loved it like the rest.

When poppa dragon told the mother chicken, she had smiled and said, “Take care of that special little one. He will be a legend for many years to come, and even after that, people will talk about how such a little chicken can accomplish so much.” Other than that, she didn’t explain much more.

Later, 7 years later, the dragons had grown big and strong, they had become fierce warriors of the land, but, little Smokey, the black chicken stayed at home. In fact, one day, he asked momma dragon

“Momma, why am I so little? I can’t even fly like the others.” Saddened by this momma dragon spoke

“My dear child, it does not matter how small you are, all that matters is what you do.” After being told this, little Smokey was determined to do something helpful. He set out to the king dragons land, and while traveling heard that a mother dragon had died, and her babies were left all alone. He quickly changed his course and headed toward those eggs in the upper folding of the dragon land.

Smokey found the lonely eggs and tried to sit on them to keep them warm, but he couldn’t as he was too small. A few passerby’s laughed when they saw Smokey flopped on top of those eggs. When the night turned cold, he shivered in the dark. Only to soon remember he could blow spurts of fire. A light bulb switched on inside his head, and he soon set to work building a fire to keep himself warm.

What he did next was legendary. All night long, he snorted out small huffs and puffs of fire on the eggs, keeping them warm. He did this for one whole week, only to be rewarded.

C-R-A-C-K! The eggs broke open, and three small dragons came out, and swarmed little Smokey. The whole kingdom soon heard of Smokey’s spectacular deed, and he was named Sir Smokey the First.

Now children, whenever you think you can’t make a difference, remember the story of Little Smokey, because then you will know that you can make a difference.
