Prologue
I walked down the hallway after leaving my friends to their antics. It was the same as every day. They would all talk about how Soreno and Jacklyn should get together and then they would copy each other’s homework. It was all the same and while I loved my friends I was tired of just watching them.
It’s why I would lie about asking my teachers for help just so I could get away and be by myself. Or with Elizabeth and David. Those two always made my day fun with them always getting in trouble.
I continued walking until I stepped on her foot and once again I fell. It was a common occurrence and since it happened so often I had gotten quite good at stopping myself before I made contact with the ground.
Almost catching my step I felt a hand steady me and put me back upright. I quickly turned to see who had helped me and was met with the face of a stranger.
“Thank you.” I knew that I was blushing because I always blushed when talking to someone I didn’t know. My brother always made fun of me and I expected the tall stranger to do the same.
“No problem, Eleanor.” He gave me a smile at the confused look I probably had on my face. “We have English together.”
“I’m sorry. It’s just that I don’t really pay attention in that class to my other students because I am trying so hard not to fall asleep.” I laughed a nervous laugh and was glad that he joined in on the laughing or I would have looked weirder than I already did.
“True. So I’ll see you around?”
“I guess. It’s not a big school.” I gave a shrug of my shoulders trying to appear calm but really I was trying really hard to hide my blush that was becoming redder each word that I spoke.
He laughed before he walked away with a goodbye wave. I waved back before he turned the corner and let my hand drop. I let out a breath of air as I could feel the sudden hotness I had experienced was coming down.
Turning around I was met with the face of Elizabeth and once again she was smirking. “Is he another potential future boyfriend?”
“Stop trying to get me a boyfriend. I’m fine being alone. After all, it’s only high school.”
Beth had been trying to get me a boyfriend since Sophomore year and each time I had gone missing whenever a meeting was to take place.
“I want you to feel what I am feeling and being in love is a wonderful feeling.” She put a hand to her heart with an idiot look on her face.
“You’re not in love.”
“Of course I am! You’re just a hater.”
I thought about what Beth said. While I didn’t hate loveI just didn’t believe in the happiness that it brings. After watching my mother go through so many break-ups I had lost faith in love even if I wasn’t the one being broken up with. I was the one who had to take care of her when it happened and that was enough for me.
I couldn’t deal with my heart breaking so I wasn’t going to fall in love. I might date a couple of guys but wasn’t going to fall in love. Never. As long as I had control over my heart and mind everything should go as planned. My vow will forever stay intact.
