Chapter 1

The beginning

It all happened when they shut down Facility G sub region-001. The government deemed the facility ‘useless’. What the government didn’t know was that they had one of the most dangerous entities inside the facility. When they built the facility, they built it over an anomaly that was found during an archeologist dig. They wanted to run a Geo Phys over the land.

Being archeologists they thought the anomaly was an Avro 504. There had been rumours around the town that an Avro 504 crashed there. Excited by their discovery, they dug their shovels in the damp soil and they found a mound of flesh. It puzzled the archeologists. The archeologists reported it to the police who reported it to the previous government. The previous government shutdown the archaeologist dig and ordered a facility to be built. To them they didn’t have to go and find a specimen. It was right there. At the time it was an ideal location choice. While they were building the facility they took it from the ground and put it inside a makeshift containment chamber for the time being. When they finished the facility, they took it into the facility and contained it. It nearly escaped. Due to the lack of workers. The only thing that stopped it was ultraviolet light. All its body functions powered down.

When the government shut it down, they also shut off the power. That meant the ultraviolet light turned off, according to the audio logs of the removal team they said it had rooted itself into the ground. When the removal team went to remove the blob it wouldn’t budge. They tried everything. Explosives everything. It was now part of the building, or the building was part of it now. The removal team never came back. In July 2019 they were deemed dead.

Going into Year 9 was the worst choice I’ve ever made. Not that I had a choice but whatever. We always got lots of homework about 5 books a subject. Most of them contain junk like: Colour in the picture of this donkey! The department of education should’ve shut this school down a while ago. This is why my mum Tutors me. It’s not just that, it’s the bullies as well. Primary school barely had any bullies. High school they are all over the place, every corner you turn, everywhere you look they’re there. I can only imagine how bad university would be. One second they’re not there the next they appear.

I was just minding my own business. The day had been going great. The long weekend was here. Everyone was excited. No school for 4 days. Isn’t that amazing?

I was walking out of science class (The most hated class in school) My friend Robby was right next to me. He was looking at the butterflies or something. I was pretty burned out. We had to watch a video about physics. Every year we do the same thing on the same day. Watching something you don’t like takes a lot of energy out of you. Yes! I’ve nearly made it. I was nearing the gate when I heard a voice.

“Hey CRANE!” Troy yelled.

Spoke too soon. I stopped.

“Where’s my lunch money?” he growled.

He took several long strides towards me. He was so close that I could smell what he had for lunch. Avocado sandwich with sticky peanut butter. Also a hint of pancake batter. I had to crane my neck up just so I could see him. That’s probably where I got the nickname from. I kept quiet.

“Where is it Crane boy?” he growled.

“Up your sausage rolls-sized nostrils”, I muttered softly but not softly enough.

“What did you just say to me?” he snarled.

I kept quiet. I always say something stupid when I am in a bad situation.

“I think he said up your sausage rolls-sized nostrils”, my friend Robby said.

I was about to yell something rude but Troy punched my head. He punched me over and over again until I blacked out. I could hear the voices of Troy laughing and Robby telling him off. I then woke up on the concrete floor. My friend Robby was beside me.

“I’m so sorry, mate”, he said.

I rolled my eyes. This wouldn’t be the first time this happened, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. After that I walked home, still limping from the beat-up that Troy gave me.

My house was in sight when Troy rocked up on his bike with his cronies right behind him. He has complete control over them.

“Hey Joey, fetch me a doughnut,” He would say.

“Yes my king,” They would say back.

It’s like he scooped out their brain and replaced it with a remote control. It would be a very messy process. Doing that.

“Get out of my face, Sausage roll-nostrils”, I mumbled.

I started to limp away. A limp turned into a limping run but I couldn’t outrun the bikes. Scientifically bikes that have 8th grade sociopaths on them are typically faster than your average limping 8th grader. Troy and his cronies got off their bikes and made their way towards me. Troy was just about to punch me again when his mum called him for dinner.

“Troy, Honey, Teatime!” His mum yelled from the house.

Troy lived directly across from me. “You’re lucky punk,” he threatened.

He and his cronies walked away. I sighed in relief. Now that’s what you call lucky. Quickly, I ran for my house. I tore open the door and ran inside. Slamming the door shut. I walked to the dining room and put my bag down. On the table, I noticed that there was a note. The note read:

Dear Emmet, Hey honey, I have to work late today. There is frozen spaghetti in the fridge. All you have to do is heat it up in the microwave. Love mum. X0X0X0 X0X0X0

I sighed. Mum always has to work late. There’s always a problem going on in the kid’s ward. It’s like all kids nowadays only know how to get a bloody nose, contract a virus and break various ligaments. No matter what day it is, she ALWAYS has to work late. So much that I’m used to not seeing her around. I saw some pots and pans in the cupboards. They were arranged neatly. The biggest to the smallest.

“Huh, I wonder who cleaned the house today?” I said while walking up to my room.

I closed the door behind me and took out the sleek black case from under my bed. I opened it. It revealed a typewriter. Before my father died, he was a writer. He was going to be rich and famous. He was going to get his first book published. He was driving to the publisher to sign the contract, there was a truck heading straight towards him. He tried to swerve out the way but was too late. Later they found out that the truck driver was drunk, and they sentenced him to 10 years of prison. I was only five years old. It’s best to leave those memories alone, they’re like a fire. Warm at first but get too close and it hurts too much.

I set the typewriter on the desk. I typed a sentence. Before I knew it, I had written a chapter. Since my dad was a writer I had a certain knack for writing. I was about to begin the next chapter when I heard this strange noise. It sounded like an intense wet fart. It was then followed by the noise of pots and pans hitting the floor. I stopped and looked down at the typewriter. Surely a typewriter can’t make that kind of noise? Then I looked at the door. It came from downstairs. I opened the door and went down to the kitchen, where the sound came from. When I got down, I saw that all the pots and pans were on the floor. I frowned. I bent down and started to pick them up. As I was picking them up I heard something scuttling in the walls. I disregarded it.

“The squirrels must be back again,” I thought

I was nearly finished when I could smell a foul odour. I turned around and saw a hole in the wall. It was surrounded by fleshy skin. I looked inside when this thing jumped out and clung to my face. I could feel its claws digging into my skin. Trying to remove my face, I felt around for a weapon. Frying pan. Oh well. “Get Fried!” I thought. I whacked the thing off my face.

It skidded on the tile floor and crashed into a wooden drawer. I stepped closer to the creature. It had dead white eyes and fleshy coverings all over its body. Its veins popping out so everyone could see them. It had claws the length of a texta. Its face was bulging. I should call someone, I thought.

My mum? No she wouldn’t believe me. Police? Nah! They’ll think it’s a prank call. Robby? I think he would believe me. I picked up the phone and dialled Robby’s number. As always he was late.

“Sorry mate. I was exercising”, he said. “Really? You exercising. What a load of rubbish. You’ve never exercised in your whole life!” I said. “Have not,” he said back.“Have too,” I said back. This went on for a while until Robby steered back to the subject. “Why the hell did you call me?”, he said, arms crossed. “I called you to show you this”, I said. I turned around and pulled out a cardboard box. He stared at the box. I pulled the lid off and gestured at the box, pursuing him to look.He looked inside and jumped back in shock. “w-w-w-w-w-w-what is that thing?” he said, while pointing at the box. It was satisfying watching him freak out. After about an hour or an hour and a half, I explained to him what had happened. I had to explain the littlest of things such as: Typing something on a typewriter and opening a door.

“We should give this to some scientists”, he said. Wow, Robby Betancourt came up with a decent idea. It’s so amazing. This is a once in a lifetime thing. I nodded and I picked up the phone. I was about to punch some numbers in when I paused. I turned to face Robby. “What number do we call?” I said. “Uhhhhhh. Let me think,” Robby replied. “My dad is friends with some doctors/scientists so let’s give them a call,” Robby suggested. I nodded. Robby gave me the phone number and we called.
