Chapter 1
The powerful family of the Charmont’s were celebrating the birth of the heir to their empire. The new mother could be seen rocking her beautiful baby girl as other women surrounded the two cooing about how much she takes after her. It was true. The baby girl came out as the spitting image of the mother. Hair dark as the night sky and brown eyes that captivated all who looked at her.
The new father and head of the empire was being congratulated by the other men. His smile was the brightest it had ever been. He carried his glass of scotch around as he spoke about the future of the empire with his loyal workers. Every so often he would look back at his wife, smiling at her for the perfect gift that would continue his legacy.
As the two parents were mingling and the music was getting louder, none had noticed the commotion just below them. The Fairisle empire, the rivals and nemesis were making their way to the party. As the guards tried to stop the vengeful family, the Fairisle walked with poise and power through all the men fighting. She walked to the elevator pressing the button to lead her to the penthouse celebration. Not a single hair was misplaced, not a wrinkle to be found on her dress, and not a single ounce of uncertainty about what she had planned.
The elevator doors opened and the woman strode through the hallway to the room with all the noise. Her stiletto heels clicked on the floor, but none had heard as they were too focused on the celebration.
“Well, well, well.” The blonde woman spoke as she stopped at the top of the steps that led to the group of people she despised with every inch of her body. “Isn’t this a boisterous celebration?” She smiled down to the group searching for the man she came to see specifically.
“Corvin Fairisle!” The new father stepped from the crowds, stopping near the edge of the bottom of the stairs where his nemesis stood. His followers stood behind him keeping a close hand on their weapons as the non-fighters cowered in a corner, covering the baby. “You’re not welcome here you cold-hearted witch!”
“Not welcomed!” Corvin scoffed at the man. She starts to laugh a little as she looks around the group seeing the midnight hair standing protectively in front of a bassinet. “Well, Mrs. Charmont. You look quite radiant only given birth to the heir only four weeks ago! Or was is three weeks ago?” She put a finger on her chin pretending to think about the timeframe.
“What do you want?” The new mother hesitantly asks. She tries to gain as much courage as she can, but her voice gives her true feelings away.
“I want—” Corvin pauses, pretending to think again. She smiles as she turns her face to the new father. “Alwyn knows what I want.” Her smile has a fire that burns with hatred and heartache. “Alwyn knows what I need.” She continues to keep the smile plastered on her face as she continues to walk down the steps. “Do you want to tell your wife why I am here?” She cocks her head to the side keeping her blank stare at the man as she stopped only a few steps away from him.
Alwyn licks his lips his stare locking in on Corvin’s. “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Oh, you know. I have the rats that squealed the truth about you so fast I would have been here sooner. Only I wanted the correct payment.” Corvin spoke as the veins in her neck and arms started to bulge. She was trying to keep her composure as much as she could, wanting him to admit the wrong and heartless things he had done to her family.
“Alwyn–” The new mother whispered to her husband. He slowly turned to her and kept the stare he had given his nemesis. She could read that face and she gasped in horror of realizing what her husband had done. “Corvin, I’m so sorry. Please—”
“I don’t want your pity. I want my rightful payment. An eye for an eye.” Corvin whispers the last sentence to Alwyn. He doesn’t break eye contact with her and she snickers as she drops her gaze to the floor before picking her head back up, pushing her short blonde hair out of her face. “Or would it be, heir for an heir?” She smiles at him.
The new mother screams in protest as she grabs her newborn baby out of her bassinet clutching the child to her chest. Crying and screaming at her husband to find a different way to pay for his wrongs. She wails as other women and members of the empire guard her and the baby from the threat that stands at the steps smiling at their leader.
“It was not me Corvin.” He states once more, ignoring his wife. “Leave my family out of this.” He keeps the stare not acknowledging the small tear that falls down his cheek from hearing his wife cry to him.
“Fine.” Corvin turns and walks back up the steps. She gets to the top, stopping with her back facing her rival empire. A thought came to her mind, laughing at why she hadn’t thought of it before. She turns to look back at the group as a few of her members run in taking their place behind her. “How about a deal, Alwyn?”
“What deal?” He asks her.
“I let you find the one who killed my eldest and husband; prove your innocence to me and I won’t kill your heir tonight. But you have until the day of her twenty-first birthday when she takes over the empire. If you still can not prove your innocence, I kill your heir like you killed mine.” She states as her face settles into a cold stare almost turning Alwyn into ice.
“An heir for an heir.” He whispers to her. His wife erupts, screaming at the two leaders. Pleading to leave her baby out of it. Begging Corvin for forgiveness, to find kindness in her heart. Her pleading only seems to get louder until there is a sudden silence followed by a rush of screams unfamiliar to the new father.
Alwyn turns around to see his now-dead wife on the floor as a pool of blood surrounds her head. One of the women tasked to watch over the baby cradles the pink cloth holding his child who is now screaming from the loud noise that has taken over the entire room.
“To make sure she stays as the true heir,” Corvin states as she exits. Her members followed behind her, keeping eyes out if the Charmont empire tried anything. Alwyn can be heard crying out to his wife, screaming for one of his followers to get the medics.
