Sonder.

sonder.

Sonder; the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own, with their own experiences, emotions, and perspectives. It’s the realization that everyone around you has their own unique story and existence. You’re walking through a busy city street, what do you see? people — rushing by each with their own destinations, hopes, and dreams. You’re sitting in a café, you look around. What do you see? People — engrossed in their studies, conversations, activities, and indulgent treats. You wonder about the stories behind the expressions of those around you. What are they thinking about? Where are they headed?

You ponder these reasons — why are they here, too? What drove them to be here at this moment?

The ebb and flow of strangers reminds you of the vast tapestry of lives that intertwine, each thread a unique story. The hurried footsteps, the distant gazes, all serve as a reminder of the intricate narratives that play out in the backdrop of your own existence.

As you sit in a quiet café, the low hum of conversations becomes a symphony of individual tales, blending into a cacophony of humanity’s diverse experiences. You have found yourself wondering about the thoughts behind the furrowed brows and the smiles exchanged. The very air seems to vibrate with the energy of countless aspirations, fears, and aspirations, merging and diverging in a dance of existence. Amidst the sea of “might-have-beens” and “once-weres,” you contemplate what connects us all, the invisible threads that bind your journey with those who pass by. The shared experience of existence becomes palpable, prompting questions about fate and chance. As you immerse yourself in these thoughts, you reflect, and the contemplative tone deepens, urging you to seek understanding and connection.

Here exists a phenomenon both delicate and profound. “Sonder.” If you hadn’t already done so in real-life, you have now understood and likely contemplated what you’ve just read. You are part of external experiences flowing through time. Maybe the time in your life where not one thing occurs, is the time you’re the background-character of someone else’s dramatic tale. You likely wouldn’t know when, or how, but it probably occurred just the other day.

Can you think of an eventful period of your life where others were around, minding their own business, focusing on their own lives? If that moment of your life were part of a film, those around you would be assets to the theme — background characters.

Personally, I could think of a time in my life where others may have been featured in my own tale and perhaps, the other way around…
