Chapter 1
The sun began its descent on the eve of Aurora Robinson’s eighteenth birthday, casting a warm golden glow across the sprawling estate where she had spent her entire life. Nestled within the tranquil countryside, the Robinson mansion stood as a testament to a bygone era, its grandeur a stark reminder of the family’s storied history.
Aurora, the sole child of the late Myra Robinson, found herself standing by her bedroom window, her thoughts consumed by the bittersweet memories of a mother she hardly knew. Her mother had passed away when Aurora was just a child, leaving her father to raise her with unwavering love and devotion.
As the orange hues of the setting sun painted the sky, Aurora’s father entered her room, a hint of excitement etched upon his face. His salt-and-pepper hair glistened in the fading light, and his eyes, so much like Aurora’s, reflected a mix of anticipation and uncertainty.
Aurora was lost in a sea of swirling emotions. Her gaze fixated on the window, but now, her mind was consumed by a storm of anger and resentment towards her father. The news of his impending marriage had shattered the fragile bond they once shared.
Richard Robinson, his face etched with worry, entered the room and called out to his daughter. “Aurora... Aurora,” he repeated, his voice tinged with desperation. Yet, she remained silent, refusing to acknowledge his presence.
Undeterred, Richard attempted once more, his voice filled with a mix of trepidation and longing. “Aurora, please, can we talk? I need to know... Are you still mad at me about Elizabeth?”
Aurora slowly turned her head, her eyes meeting her father’s gaze, but she remained silent. Her silence spoke volumes, a resolute refusal to engage in conversation about the woman who threatened to replace her mother's memory.
Richard’s heart sank as he observed his daughter’s stoic expression. He took a hesitant step closer, his voice trembling with a blend of sorrow and desperation. “Aurora, I understand your pain. I never want anyone to take your mother’s place. Elizabeth will never replace her. She will simply be a new presence in our lives, someone who can bring joy and companionship to us both.”
Aurora’s lips tightened into a thin line, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I don’t want anyone to take her place, Father. I don’t want someone else to be my mother.”
Richard’s face softened, his voice filled with a mix of empathy and reassurance. “Aurora, no one can replace your mother. She will always hold a special place in our hearts. But Elizabeth is a kind and caring woman, and she wants to be a part of our lives. I thought you might find some comfort in knowing that you'll have a new brother. Cristiano is a wonderful young man, and I believe you two could grow to care for each other.”
Aurora’s anger momentarily wavered, curiosity flickering in her eyes. A new brother?
She had met Elizabeth before but she did not know she had a son, or ever met him. Maybe if she asked Elizabeth anything about her everytime she tried to make conversation with Aurora, she would have known. But the news of a new brother named Cristiano... The notion stirred a mix of emotions within her, a blend of apprehension and a glimmer of hope. But the weight of her grief and the fear of losing her mother’s memory still held her captive.
“I don’t need a new brother,” Aurora whispered, her voice tinged with vulnerability.
“I need my mother. I need things to stay the same, to keep her alive in our hearts.”
Richard’s heart ached, torn between his desire for happiness and his daughter’s pain. He reached out, his hand trembling, but stopped short of touching her. “Aurora, I know this is difficult, but life moves forward. We can’t stay trapped in the past forever. I promise you, Elizabeth will never replace your mother. But she deserves a chance to be a part of our lives, and perhaps, in time, we can find a way to honor your mother’s memory while embracing the future.”
Aurora turned her gaze away, her face a mask of conflicting emotions. The room grew heavy with unspoken words, the silence echoing their fractured bond.
Before leaving, Richard said to Aurora, “And, tomorrow on your 18th birthday, you’ll get to meet your new brother for the first time. He is flying back to the country just to attend your birthday party.”
