Summary

Following the danger he and his family faced in Italy over the summer, Albert Altham, Lord Canterbury, is determined to return to the safety of normal life. As a new member of Parliament he believes the days of cases simply falling into his lap are over. That is, until he is approached by a young woman by the name of Eugenia Farthing, who asks him if he could look into the murder of her husband Sir Jonathan. This, however, is no normal request. Sir Jonathan's body was found on the library floor two weeks ago, under a portrait of his likeness painted by Mrs Farthing's cousin–the beautiful and enigmatic Sally Rembrandt. Sally is only the first of many layers in a mystery as convoluted as this. And Lord Canterbury finds himself entangled in conflict–trying to repress his feelings for Sally while facing an even more sinister enemy that seems increasingly tied to her. Each time a murder occurs it is discovered that one of Sally's portraits hangs in their homes. Not to mention the sitters' payments are exorbitant, allowing her a luxurious suite, new furs, and expensive jewellery. But as always, not everything is as it seems.
