Let Them Eat Cake!

Welcome to Let Them Eat Cake, Book 1 in a series of six.

1st of June, a warm sunny morning.

Yep, the sign was straight and the colours were good, the workmen climbed down their ladders eyeing up their handiwork as Nick Dance stood back hands on hips, satisfied at last, the final touch was done and his Cake business was ready to open.

Nick Dance, 24, proprietor of;

*Let Them Eat Cake*

He loved that, his dream was finally real and he'd been able to set up shop in his home town near his parents.

Having travelled after college picking up design ideas and methods from all over, Nick settled back in England to open his own business.

At age 8 his mum had made him his first hand made birthday cake with racing cars crudely fashioned in sugar paste and from that moment he'd been hooked, watching her mixing, baking, icing and decorating enthralled the young Nick, sparking an interest in the boy.

Being the only man on the College Course had been a little odd at first, especially with his 6ft 3 toned frame, deep red semi long hair and tattooed shoulder making him stand out among the otherwise totally female class.

But once the others saw him work there was no mistaking why he was there, despite not doing great at anything particular at school his uncanny ability to produce beautiful cakes shone.

Business boomed at the shop and Nick was in his own personal heaven.

Soon enough he needed an assistant and in came a young girl, 18 and eager to learn, he and Sasha clicked like brother and sister, sharing his knowledge to the young woman they formed a bond that grew and grew, life was pretty sweet.

One thing he hadn't shared with Sasha however was his sexuality, not that he hid it but he didn't advertise it either, just keeping that part of his life on the down low.

His love life hadn't been anything to write home about and he preferred not to dwell on his personal disasters, and focus on the business he'd worked hard to create, his dream.

Running his own business was everything he could've wished for.

Seeing every walk of life come through his doors then leaving with happy smiles always made him feel good, but as the old saying goes.... "there's always one"......and that one customer had just walked in.

"Motherofthebridezilla alert"

Nick nudged Sasha as the shop door swung open aggressively and a woman strode into the small shop, looking around with a face that looked like she had a nasty smell under her perfect nose.

The woman, in her 50s, was clad entirely in a suit of designer labels, perfect copper hair, fake nails, too white teeth and heels that could pierce concrete.

Standing like a 70s fashion model, hands on hips her designer handbag swinging she glared at the pair behind the counter.

Sasha scowled, taking an instant dislike to the aura around the woman she kept the fake smile plastered to her face.

"Welcome, can I help you?", she chimed brightly through gritted teeth.

Stalking up to the counter dragging her perfectly made up eyes up and down Sasha's person, taking in her 5ft 4 inch slim figure, round friendly face with blue eyes and freckles and blonde hair thrown up in a bun, a look of distaste crossed the womans face.

"I want to speak to the owner of this establishment I take it that is NOT you?!".

A sharp scarlet nail pointed directly at the girls nose as Nick cleared his throat, "that would be me madam, how can I help?".

Flicking her eyes up and down, taking in the mans disheveled look and wonky apron Mrs Nasty Smell grimaced openly at the sight of the tattoos peeking below the rolled up sleeves.

"I need a cake and I need one stat" the woman snapped, "our caterer has let us down, of course we will sue", she waved a ring heavy hand at the air, "they'll never work again".

Nick raised a brow hearing Sasha huff angrily beside him at the womans attitude.

"Anyway, you're the only shop I haven't tried so you better be good, wedding cake, four tier, scarlet and gold roses, gold leaf, lacework, cherubs, three weeks time understand?".

Glaring at Nick obviously expecting him to grovel as most did in her presence the woman attempted to stare him down.

"No!", Nick stated glaring right back at her watching the woman's face turn scarlet with shock at being spoken to so directly.

"We take requests we don't take demands"!.

"You madam are very rude and I suggest you leave my shop now, would you like me to get the door for you?", Nick said sweetly with a dangerous glint in his dark eyes.

"How DARE you?", the scarlet faced woman narrowed her eyes, "do you know who I am?".

Nick crossed his arms and stared her down once more.

"I don't care who you are please leave".

Leaving the counter Nick strolled to the door opening it wide, bowing down sweeping a dramatic hand towards the door he signalled to the obnoxious woman to leave, "please don't come again, goodbye".

As Mrs Nasty Smell stomped towards the door Nick swore her heels were leaving cracks in the floor as she stomped across the shop like a stroppy child.

"FINE, I will find someone worthy not some small time HACK", the woman screeched as she swept on past, a trail of expensive scent wafting after her.

Watching as the woman pulled her mobile from her bag and punched some numbers Nick shook his head as the woman shrieked down the phone as she walked away.

"Alfonse find me a caterer stat, the best Alfonse, wedding cake, three weeks, or say goodbye to your job" her words tailed off as she marched angrily down the street.

Nick could only hope that Alfonse opted for a career change.

"Bloody hell what a bitch", murmured Sasha exhaling loudly as Nick rejoined her at the counter.

"Let's hope that's the last we see of her", Nick mused, glancing at the clock, seeing it was nearing closing time Nick pulled off his apron as Sasha grabbed the broom and began the clean up, "let's bloody hope so", the young woman muttered shaking her head.

"I'll give you a ride home on the way to mum and dads", Nick smiled as he cashed up the till.
