CHAPTER ONE
Her father’s voice beamed with desperation, but Luna could not do anything. She couldn’t move her body even an inch; her tongue stiffened in her mouth. She lay on the cold, damp stone floor of a dimly lit castle basement, watching helplessly as her father was mercilessly stabbed. His anguished cries for her, each one more desperate than the last, echoed off the walls. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision. The only thing she could do was watch the horrific scene unfold before her.
The basement was a haunting place, with shadows dancing on the walls cast by the flickering torches. A sweet yet sickening fragrance lingered in her nose, an odd contrast to the dank, moldy scent of the underground chamber. It was as if someone had spilled perfume to mask the stench of death and decay that permeated the air.
Luna’s mind struggled to stay conscious, fighting against the overwhelming dizziness that clouded her senses. Her head throbbed, and her vision swam with dark spots. The flickering torchlight in the castle basement cast eerie shadows that danced mockingly on the damp, cold stone walls. The stench of mold mixed with the sickeningly sweet fragrance in the air, a bizarre contrast that made her stomach churn.
Suddenly, a sharp, searing pain struck her chest, as if something were being forcefully driven into her body. Every attempt to resist made the agony more intense, like being stabbed by dozens of swords, over and over again. She wanted to scream, to release the torment inside her, but her voice was trapped in her throat, unable to break free. Her body felt heavy, every limb weighed down by an unseen force. She could feel the cold, rough stone beneath her, but it seemed distant as if she were floating above her own body.
Her breaths came in shallow gasps, each one more labored than the last. Despite the excruciating pain, Luna fought with every ounce of strength she had left. She couldn’t let go; she couldn’t give up. Her father’s voice, now weak and fading, spurred her on. She had to fight. She wanted to fight, but her body refused to obey her desperate will.
Each passing moment felt like an eternity. The torches’ light grew dimmer, the shadows longer. The last pain she felt was so unbearable, a final, torturous spike of agony that seemed to tear her apart from the inside. The last thing she remembered was Rafe’s triumphant smile, a sinister grin etched on his face as he loomed over her miserable body. His eyes glinted with a dark satisfaction, reveling in her suffering.
In the midst of her agony, she heard someone screaming, a sound piercing through the haze of pain and darkness. She didn’t know who it was, but the voice, filled with raw emotion and desperation, somehow comforted her. It was a lifeline, a beacon of humanity in the sea of torment she was drowning in.
………………….
“Arhh…. Hh…. Hhh...” Luna woke up from her tortured dream again. It had been a month since she was thrust back in time to the years before she died, but the nightmare never left her alone. Every night, sleep eluded her, replaced by haunting memories and relentless torment.
She sat up in bed, her body drenched in sweat, her heart pounding in her chest. The room around her was shrouded in darkness, save for the faint glow of moonlight filtering through the small window. Luna took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but the echo of her father’s desperate cries and Rafe’s triumphant smile lingered in her mind.
This may be the price she needed to pay, after all. Despite the endless nightmares, she still considered herself lucky. She had been given a chance to go back to the past, even though she didn’t know why or how. It didn’t matter to her. All her energy, all her focus, was now directed towards one goal: revenge.
Luna swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up, her resolve hardening with every step she took across the cold floor. The room was sparse, a simple chamber in the castle she once called home, before everything was ripped away from her. She walked to the window and looked out, the vast expanse of the castle grounds stretching out beneath her. The moon hung high in the sky, casting an eerie light over the landscape.
She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. The pain was a welcome reminder of her determination. She had a second chance, an opportunity to set things right. Rafe would pay for what he had done, and she would reclaim what was rightfully hers. The thought of vengeance fueled her, giving her the strength to push through the fear and the pain.
Luna turned away from the window, her mind already plotting her next move. She had to be careful, to play her cards right. She walked over to a small chest at the foot of her bed and opened it. Inside were the tools and documents she had been gathering over the past month, preparing for the day when she would strike. Her eyes scanned the items, each one a piece of her plan.
The first plan, to break her engagement with Rafe, had not yet been accomplished. Rafe was really against it, and her father, the leader of the pack, was reluctant to accept Luna’s decision. After all, both of them were the best alphas in the pack, and their marriage was seen as a union that would make the pack stronger than ever.
Luna took a deep breath and closed the chest, her heart more steady right now. She knew she had been given a rare gift, a chance to rewrite her fate. She wouldn’t squander it. The nightmares is a small price to remind her of what she had to fight for.
................
“It’s ridiculous, Luna! You can’t just undo our engagement like this. We promised each other. The rite is in six months; you can’t back down now!” Rafe’s voice was laced with anger as he paced the room, his eyes blazing with frustration.
They were in the grand hall of the castle, a room filled with ornate tapestries depicting the history of their pack. The flickering light from the grand chandelier above cast long shadows on the stone walls, creating an almost oppressive atmosphere. The heavy oak table in the center of the room was covered with maps and documents related to the Ascension Rite, a constant reminder of the stakes involved.
Luna stood stoic, her expression unyielding. She wore a deep blue tunic embroidered with the Hawthorne family crest, her long, silver hair intricately braided and pinned up in an elegant updo that spoke of her noble status. She had anticipated this reaction. Rafe’s concern was not about their engagement but about the Ascension Rite, the crucial test to determine the next heir of the pack leader. Only three families with a history of leadership could participate in the rite, and their union had been seen as a powerful alliance.
“Who said I’ll back down?” Luna replied coolly, her eyes locked onto his. “I won’t back down. I’m the one who carries the Hawthorne name. It’s my right to join the Ascension Rite.” She could see the impact of her words as Rafe’s face contorted with barely restrained fury. Mentioning their family name was a calculated move. Despite Rafe being part of the Hawthorne lineage, he was born out of wedlock, a fact that made his position precarious.
Rafe took a step closer, his dark hair was disheveled from running his hands through it in frustration. “Hawthorne is my family too! Together, we were supposed to strengthen our family. Without me, you’re risking everything!”
Luna’s gaze hardened. “I’m not risking anything, Rafe. The Hawthorne legacy is my birthright, mine, and I don’t need you to win the rite.” Her voice was steady, betraying none of the turmoil she felt inside.
The room was filled with a tense silence as Rafe struggled to contain his rage. He knew that Luna had the stronger claim, and without their engagement, his path to power was uncertain. “You’re making a mistake,” he finally said, his voice low and dangerous.
“But Luna, you still need a partner to join the rite, and Rafe is our best choice, you know it,” her father, who had been silent all this time, finally spoke. He stood at the head of the table, his regal presence commanding attention. His eyes, usually filled with warmth for his daughter, were now stern and concerned.
“He’s not. I’ll find my own partner,” Luna said firmly.
Her father sighed in frustration, knowing how determined his daughter was, even though this determination was uncharacteristic of her. He glanced at Magnus, his right-hand man, who stood beside him with a similar look of exasperation. Magnus, a tall and imposing figure, wore a simple but well-tailored tunic, his demeanor reflecting the seriousness of the situation. This discussion had been ongoing for almost a month, and Luna had shown no sign of backing down. He had to make a decision not only as a father but also as a pack leader.
“Three weeks. I give you three weeks to find a partner, and he must be able to beat Rafe,” her father finally said.
Luna nodded even though she didn’t like the idea, but it was a chance she must take it, “I will, Father.”
Rafe’s eyes narrowed, but he remained silent, his mind already scheming. Luna’s father and Magnus exchanged a glance, both men clearly uneasy but resigned to the decision.
………………………
“I still don’t understand why you should break off your engagement. Sure, Rafe is not the best man in the pack; he’s a jerk most of the time, but he is the strongest one. He’s the perfect person to help you become the leader,” Isolde, Luna’s best friend, asked, her brow furrowed in confusion. She knew how obsessed Luna was with becoming the next leader and maintaining their family legacy.
They were sitting in Luna’s private chambers, a room filled with the warmth of a crackling fire in the hearth. The walls were adorned with rich tapestries and portraits of their ancestors, reminders of the long line of leaders in Luna’s family. The scent of lavender from a nearby bouquet of flowers filled the air, creating a soothing contrast to the tension between the two friends. Luna, with her silver hair styled in an intricate updo, wore a simple yet elegant dress that accentuated her regal bearing.
“He’s not perfect, and you said it yourself, he’s a jerk. I don’t want to spend my whole life with a jerk partner. I need someone I can trust,” Luna said firmly, her eyes reflecting a mix of determination and underlying pain. She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms defiantly. The flickering firelight cast shadows that danced across her face, highlighting the intensity of her resolve.
“Sure, easy peasy. It’s not hard at all to find you a trustworthy and strong partner who will willingly help you, join the rite, and probably kill himself for you,” Isolde replied with heavy sarcasm, rolling her eyes. She sat across from Luna, her posture relaxed but her tone sharp. Isolde’s blonde hair was pulled back into a loose braid, and she wore a comfortable, worn tunic and pants, a stark contrast to Luna’s formal attire.
Luna’s lips curled into a playful smile, her eyes softening for a moment. “Well, if I can’t find that kind of person, I’ll just take you to be my partner,” she said, winking playfully. The light-hearted comment brought a brief respite from the serious topic at hand.
“I’ll pass. I don’t love you that much,” Isolde said stoically, though her lips twitched as if suppressing a smile. She leaned back in her chair, the flickering light from the fireplace casting a warm glow over her face.
“But what about Rafe then?” Isolde asked, her tone becoming serious again. “If, by some miracle, you do find a partner, what about Rafe? Is he still eligible to join the rite? Of course, with someone else?”
Luna’s playful expression faded, replaced by a steely determination. “I don’t know, nor care. That’s the elders’ problem, not mine,” she answered, her voice firm.

Rafe is going to betray Luna in the future with torture. Oh wow! 😮
