Chapter 1
They say History is written by the victor. Always. They bury and hide things to shape what is seen to keep their image pristine but not everything can stay buried. For me, my history is still being written and I have no idea who will be the victor.
I slam the book shut and rub my eyes as I chug the last of my ice coffee. I look at my laptop and see the time 10:33pm. I make the last of my notes in my notebook before powering down and packing up. This college library had always been one of my favorite. John Hopkins University. Well, this certainly isn’t the latest I’ve stayed here working on something for my degree. Sometimes I really do question why I come back and go through with graduate degrees. I roll my neck and before I can grab my things and stand up an Undergraduate student smoothly slides into the chair across from me with his paper in hand.
“James, to what do I owe the honor?” He slides his paper that was marked an F. Surprised he went to the hassle of printing it off to show it physically, really.
“This paper was good. How could you fail me? I know it was good.”
I looked at him feeling something but really unsure what exactly. “Of course, it was good.” I start grabbing my things and stand up. I slowly lean down towards him, “My mother wrote it of course it’s good. You’re lucky I didn’t report you to the board.” I slide his paper back to him and his face pales ever so slightly.
I pushed my chair in and head out to the fresh air. I can hear him as he scrambles and tries to chase after me. I reach the doors and push them wide taking in a lungful of air having been in the library since 8 am. I go out to head towards the parking lot. James soon falls in line next me. He walks with me but doesn’t say anything. He towers over me for sure but honestly it’s not really hard to do being 5 feet 5 in. I stop and face him. “What do you want? This is not my office nor the classroom. If you need to discuss your paper in more detailed terms please see me then, James”
He looks me at and tilts his head and he opens his mouth to say something but ends up shaking his head and walking away from me. Truly strange indeed. He has always been a weird one but definitely something….weird is there. I really can’t place my finger on it. I pull my long black coat closer to me as the October air bites at me. I head out towards the parking lot but end up slipping behind a building before disappearing and appearing inside the office at one of the local nightclubs Playground. The manager Frank looks at me through his glasses before leaning back in his chair. “Well, haven’t seen you in awhile darling,” as he proceeds to go back to balancing out his ledger. “Store your things. Your outfits, of course, are cleaned.” He waves me off. I go to the locker behind him and press my hand to the lock and it clicks open.
“Glad you haven’t change all these years Frank.” He grunts as I place my belonging in the locker and grab out a leather harness and black mid thigh lace dress. I head into the office bathroom and change. The lace hugs my body and has tight sleeves and a collar. I need to let loose tonight but things still must be covered. I step out and throw my clothes into the locker. I was already wearing my Docs and just decided to keep those on. I close the locker and lock it up and as I head past the desk into the nightlife Frank grabs my wrist and stares into me with clouded eyes.
“Run and hide you will. For the other half is coming wanting to take everything down. Loved ones finally alive and broken free but the cost will be greater then you know. Things are not always what they seem be cautious one from all three for only you can wield it.” His eyes turn back to being blue and releases my wrist like it’s on fire. “Big things are coming darling.” He snaps his fingers, “Your belongings have been sent to your home as you will not be coming back in here for awhile.” He shakes his head muttering, “Big things, big things but she will try and run and hide but that will not undo what was already done so long ago.”
I walk out of the office. Seers so creepy but once it’s out it’s out and no way to run away from it now. However, over the years I’ve learned they won’t or can’t reveal more then what is said in the moment. It has always annoyed the crap out of me. I head onto the dance floor and let the bass pour into soul and seep into my bones. Moving one with the crowd. The lights roam over us showing off the immortals that lie in deep. Faeries, vampires, werewolves, gods, etc. Letting loose among one another showing their true selves. It is definitely a beauty to behold and soon a werewolf comes up behind me grinding into me. I loll my head back unto his chest as his mouth goes to space between my neck and shoulder. I turn and grab his jaw and whisper in his ear, “I am not one to bite into submission Alpha. You bite you die.” I push my hands against his chest to see his eyes glow as I now set a challenge for him.
He nips at my ear and growls in my ear, “Did you just set forth a challenge to an Alpha?” We continue grinding into one another and soon he turns me around so my back is to his chest. He bent down ever so slightly, “Only a vampire can do me harm if I bite them and you dear are no vampire.”
I pull him down towards me, “Your mate would not appreciate it nor would I. You bite me you will lose her.” He pulls his head away and spins me around as he looks down at me. He looks me up and down and tries to figure out exactly what I am but even I have a hard time figuring that out myself.
I bite my lip and pull him close, “Just dance with me for tonight and we can go our separate ways.” We continue to dance and grind to the bass as it seeps deeper and deeper into my bones. Making me vibrate, drowning out time. I’m not sure how long I’ve been with this Alpha and how long my eyes have been closed just going with the vibrations but suddenly they snap open. Something is wrong. Something happened. I stand up straight and hurry off the dance floor. I can feel that Alpha following behind as I run into the restroom and before the door can even shut I disappear and I’m standing in front of my town-home. Wind snapping at my bare skin reminding me that I am alive still. I slowly walk up the door steps and he is standing there knocking on my door. Hades.
