Chapter 1

The Wolf

The blood of my father covered my hands, while the raindrops washed them away. I closed my eyes to avoid seeing my father’s lifeless body on the ground. My worst nightmare had come true; that which I always escaped from now showed me that it was my destiny to end up being what I swore never to become. Trembling, I stood up, clenching my fists tightly. When I turned around, a different scene unfolded before me. An immense puddle submerged my feet, reflecting an intense blue while the infinite black consumed everything. I knew where I was; it was my inner world... which meant. A black silhouette approached me, disturbing the calm waters. Laughter echoed in the empty place, and its red eyes gleamed.

“Beliat...” I murmured when a smile emerged from the mist, framing its face—my face, identical to mine. It was like looking into a mirror, except with a perpetual crimson in its eyes.

“It seems I have finally quenched my thirst for blood. The fate of any alpha’s son has been fulfilled... my title, we are finally alphas.”

“No... I didn’t want this. I am not a killer!”

“This was your destiny since you were born. This was our destiny... why else would your hands be stained with blood, a blood that will never wash away?” I looked at my hands, and blood poured from them.

“What are you afraid of, Matthew? You are an alpha, a leader destined to guide your own... your pack. You are a warrior...” he took my arm and raised it in a sign of victory, while a proud smile appeared on his face.

“He was my father...”

“He was the man who killed and threatened your family. All the more reason he had to die...”

“Look at them... they are waiting for their new Alpha... they need you, they need you to lead them, and you were born for this moment.”

I looked around as everyone kneeled before me. Beliat took my father’s blood, licked my hand with his tongue, and ran his fingers across my face, provoking the ovation of everyone.

“Alpha! Alpha! Alpha!”

“You killed her! You killed her!” I woke from that trance, hearing Galaxy’s desperate cries. That feeling remained in my body... I looked at my hands, and there was no blood, but something had changed within me. That feeling that surged in my chest, rather than scaring me, I liked feeling it, and it only made me more resistant to knowing there was something within me that was no longer under control.

“Murderer... Murderer! Damn the Hackett family!” I pushed those thoughts aside and, trembling, ran towards that horrible scene. Angela was in complete shock, silently shaking her head while Galaxy held Sky in her arms, utterly distraught. When had all this happened? My family... everything I had fought for shattered in a second.

“A true Alpha would not let his comrades die before his eyes... a true Alpha protects and defends his pack... kill them all, kill all those insignificant humans.”

“Enough!” I exclaimed, silencing him. I ran towards Sky, crouching down next to her. I placed her head in my lap and pleaded while her weak eyes lost life.

“Don’t leave me, little one... you are strong, stay by my side, I need you...”

“Matt...”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t be afraid... now I know, I always knew... the moon goddess awaits me, that is my destiny.”

“Don’t say nonsense, you will be saved and come back to defend my foolishness. Now I need you more than ever. I killed my father... and I will be alpha, I don’t want to be alone, I won’t know what to do...”

“Matt... I will give you my last gift, I believe it will help you in this dark path from which you must emerge alone... because you are the only one who will break the chain our people have suffered for so many centuries, bring peace to all.”

“What... are you talking about? Stay with me, that is what I want,” she shook her head with a peaceful smile, took my face, and brought it close to her forehead. Her eyes turned completely white as she whispered something in an incomprehensible language.

“I free you, my child...” that voice was so sweet and melodious that a sense of peace washed over me. Then it was true... Sky was a bearer of the moon goddess; my father was not wrong, that’s why he wanted her with him. After those words, her eyes stopped shining to finally close them forever with an eternal smile of tranquility.

“No... my moon... why her?! Why do you punish me so, moon goddess... Why did you take my moon?!” Galaxy cried, pushing away from her body to cling to her tightly, almost as if her world had shattered before her eyes.

“Galaxy...”

“Leave me alone! I just... I just want her to open her eyes again, please... moon goddess.”

Once, my mother told me a story, one in which a wolf lost his soulmate, his moon, his mate... it was such pain for our race, the loss of our life companion, that our other half would die of sorrow, and others would simply extinguish their humanity to live in darkness.

“Matt... I didn’t... know it was her, I...” I looked at her, and seeing her tear-streaked face, she sought my support.

“Get out...”

“Matt...”

“Get out of my lands! Or I will be the one to kill you... never return, Angela.” Paul took her in his arms while his eyes, full of sorrow, looked at me. I clenched my fists, looking away, feeling each sob escaping from her mouth tearing me apart. She clung to Paul, hiding her face in his chest as they walked away. Why did it hurt so much... why...

“Turn it off... turn off your humanity, and it won’t hurt.”
