Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Calm Before the Storm
The morning sun filtered through the classroom windows of Hyoseong High School, painting the room in a soft golden glow. The students, engrossed in their daily routines, filled the halls with laughter and chatter. It was a typical day at the school, where the biggest concern was the upcoming exams and after-school clubs.
1. Yoo Na-bi (유나비) – The female lead, known for her deep love of painting, spent most of her free time in the art room, away from the bustling crowds. Her artwork was a reflection of her quiet and introspective nature, often filled with dreamy landscapes and vibrant colors that seemed to capture emotions words couldn’t express.
2. Kim Joon-seo (김준서) – The male lead, captain of the basketball team and the school’s heartthrob, was a natural leader. Despite his popularity, Joon-seo was down-to-earth and cared deeply for his friends. He had noticed Na-bi from afar, intrigued by her mysterious aura and the way she seemed lost in her own world.
3. Lee Min-ji (이민지) – Na-bi’s best friend and the school’s resident musician, was a free spirit with a contagious smile. Min-ji was the type to drag Na-bi out of her shell, convincing her to join in on adventures and bringing light into her otherwise solitary life.
4. Park Dae-hyun (박대현) – A studious and responsible student, Dae-hyun had aspirations of becoming a doctor. He was serious about his studies but had a soft spot for Min-ji, whose carefree nature balanced out his more reserved personality.
5. Choi Soo-bin (최수빈) – The school rebel, Soo-bin was often found skipping class or getting into fights. Despite her tough exterior, she had a vulnerable side that she kept hidden from everyone, except perhaps her close friend Tae-joon.
6. Han Ji-hoon (한지훈) – A recent transfer student with a mysterious past. Ji-hoon had an air of quiet confidence that made others wary of him, yet he seemed uninterested in making friends or drawing attention to himself.
7. Jeon Hye-jin (전혜진) – The diligent class president, Hye-jin was the glue that held the class together. She was organized, dependable, and took her role seriously, though the weight of responsibility often left her feeling isolated.
8. Oh Tae-joon (오태준) – The class clown, Tae-joon used humor as a shield, hiding his insecurities behind a barrage of jokes. He was always there to lighten the mood, even if his antics sometimes went too far.
As the day progressed, whispers began to circulate among the students about a strange illness affecting the neighboring city. The news was vague, with conflicting reports and rising anxiety. Some students dismissed it as a rumor, but others couldn’t shake the growing unease.
During lunch, Na-bi, Min-ji, Joon-seo, and Dae-hyun gathered in their usual spot under the large oak tree in the school courtyard. The topic of conversation inevitably turned to the illness. Min-ji, ever the optimist, tried to downplay the situation, but Dae-hyun’s serious demeanor made it clear he was concerned.
Joon-seo, always the protector, reassured his friends that whatever was happening, they would be safe. Na-bi listened quietly, her eyes drifting to the horizon where dark clouds were beginning to gather.
That evening, as the final bell rang and the students packed up to go home, there was a sense of unease lingering in the air. The usual buzz of excitement for the weekend ahead was subdued, replaced by an undercurrent of fear that none of them could quite put into words.
Unbeknownst to the students, a truck carrying a contaminated substance had crashed earlier that day near the school. The substance, a result of a secret government experiment gone wrong, was highly infectious and had begun to seep into the air.
By the time the students left school, the virus had already begun to spread, unnoticed and invisible. But the real horror was yet to come, and it would change their lives forever.
As Na-bi walked home that evening, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The usually lively streets were quieter than usual, and the sky had taken on an ominous shade of gray. She quickened her pace, her heart beating faster with each step, unaware that this would be the last time she would see her neighborhood as it was.
The storm was coming, and with it, a nightmare beyond their wildest imaginations.
This revised chapter introduces a unique twist with the contaminated substance being a result of a secret government experiment, setting the stage for a different kind of outbreak. Future chapters can explore the chaos that ensues, the relationships between the characters, and their struggle for survival in this altered reality.
