Chapter 1

Fredrick’s glasses slid down his nose as he stared out the telescope. Oh how nice it would be to live on another planet he thought. He really hated it here. He barely had any friends since he spent most of his time thinking of math, or random subjects in school. He loved knowledge, and thought it was the most important thing in the world. Not everyone agreed with him. Most people were all about fun. Not that he never had fun mind you, but it was hard when he had the sort of mother he had.

His mother hated him, she did things like leave out her contact lenses out on the floor for him to step on so he would get in trouble. He thought perhaps the fact that his father was unavailable most the time selling cars to help bring him up made her be resentful of him. Well whatever reason she had for hating him, it made the fact that he was friendless even harder to bear. A mother should love a child. It was unnatural for her to act the way she did. Fredrick didn’t understand her. So he focused on his studies instead of worrying about her. His current project was proving life was on other planets. With how many planets there were in the solar system, at least one had to have life right? Too bad this telescope wasn’t powerful enough to see distant planets. The farthest he could see was Pluto, and that wasn’t seen as a planet anymore. He would never be able to prove alien life with such a low grade tool. He wished that there was an observatory around here, but since he lived in Florida not too many places like that were around. Not that they would let him inside. Only scientists were allowed, and since he was just a teenager that didn’t include him.

Fredrick put down the telescope, and then headed for bed tired of looking at the stars wondering how many of them had planets around them. As he slept, he had a very vivid dream of being the first person to discover alien life. It was a dream he had often. He knew that he was going to do something big when he grew up. He was smart enough for it. It would certainly make up for his lack of friends! How people would be sorry when they found out how important he was! Everyone would want to be his friend! But for now, it was only a dream.

The alarm buzzing jolted him out of bed, and he jumped out ready to learn.

Today was different than most days though. There was a new girl in school. A girl named Bertha. She had glasses, short brown hair and wore plaid. Fredrick didn’t think much of her at first, but she proved to be different than any girl he had ever met.

“Hi! Your cute!”

Fredrick looked around. He wasn’t bad looking, with his wavy blonde hair but usually girls thought he was a nerd because of his glasses. And the fact that he got all A’s in his classes. And the hobbies he had. Pretty much, everything about him was nerdy. He hadn’t expected anyone to think he was good looking.

“Who me?”

She giggled and fluttered her eyelashes. It was pretty obvious that the girl had no male attention before him.

“Yeah you, who else do you think I’m talking to? With those glasses, you must be pretty smart.”

Fredrick looked over this strange new girl with a weird look on his face.

“That’s pretty stereotypical to think someone with glasses is smart. But I do get all A’s so I guess your right about that.”

She smiled, sliding up closer to him.

“Smart guys really turn me on.”

OK, this girl was not a normal girl. He heard how the girls in his class acted. Always getting worked up about the jocks in a classroom. He was beginning to wonder how far away this girl was really from, he was convinced she must really must be a alien. He ran off, thinking she might probe him for experiments or who knows what. But as he sat alone, he thought of what an opportunity this was. Not too many people actually got to meet an alien. So he decided to go back and learn more about her.

“Er, sorry about running away like that. So...where you from? What’s it like?”

Bertha blinked behind her glasses.

“I’m from Idaho, it really isn’t quite as interesting as it is here.”

So, she was going to pretend to be from Earth. How would he get her to reveal to him her true origins? This was the beginning of something beyond him, and who knows maybe they might have a romance. It was something every nerd dreamed of, being with an alien.

But of course you know Bertha really isn’t what Fredrick thinks she is.

But you never know what might be out there...
