Chapter One: 🪸 The Surface Calls Me 🪸

[English Translation]

Firstly, let me introduce myself. I’m Mia Arokzonta, but people call me Mi, or Princess Mi. I have an elder brother, Prince Koko, and my father, King Jukoh. But I have no mother.

My mother died giving birth to me, which led my father and brother to despise me. At least, that’s how it feels. They don’t let me speak during meetings with the elders or suggest anything. I’m not even allowed to have friends. I’m confined to my chamber, only allowed out for meetings and visits. But I’m the kind of princess who doesn’t listen.

“Where have you been, Princess? The king is back!” Mioma exclaimed, cupping my face.

I told you I don’t have a mother, but that doesn’t mean I’ve never felt a mother’s love. Mioma was a gift from an elder to my father, as a wife. His thirteenth wife.

After my mother died, my father married many women, nineteen wives, to be exact, not counting the concubines. Yet, despite all these wives, he only had Koko and me. So, what’s the point of marrying again? I often ask myself.

“What’s up, Princess?” Viper said, winking at me.

Viper, my future husband. I was betrothed to him when I was just a month old, due to my father’s debts. Since then, Viper has been my escape.

When I said debt, I meant it my kind of way, not the other way. Viper’s father did something for my father, the king, so when he was asked what he wanted in return, he said he wanted his son to marry me. One-month-old me. So, I got married without my consent. ONE. MONTH. OLD. All that’s left now is the bonding ceremony, just saying the bonding vows, typically, since I couldn’t say them as a baby.

“Pa, I’m going to Viper’s,” I said, lying with pride.

“Okay, but just two hours,” he instructed. “The prince will escort you—”

“No! Papa, it’s fine. I’ll go with Kiki. Koko is busy being a prince. And don’t worry, Pa, I’ll be back before you blink.” I lied again.

“Mia! I asked Koko, ‘How do I look?’ and he said, ‘You look like Kiki.’ Isn’t that cute? He even sent me a flirting text, ‘Hello, Kiki.’ Oh my God!” Kiki exclaimed, grabbed my shoulders, and then started shaking me vigorously.

‘Hello, Kiki?’ How is that a flirting text?

Kiki, my best friend, was the adopted daughter of my father’s tenth wife. She’s like a sister to me, but she never stopped crushing on Koko, my elder brother, who was like a million years older than her.

This is where my story begins.

Years ago…

In the beginning, there was the ocean. Thunderstruck, bang, bang, bang! The waves were rough. And then imagine yourself inside the ocean, breathing just fine, like me. Swim down… and when I say down, I mean down.

Swim until you reach the sand, beneath the ocean. Humans like you only see the sand, but do you know what lies beneath?

My world: Shawama, the kingdom my forefathers brought into existence, ruled in harmony. Shawama was named after my great-grandfather, saith my grandfather, Chukma Arokzonta.

I don’t think there’s anywhere more beautiful than Shawama. Well, that’s because I’ve never left the castle. My chamber, the village square, and quick glances at the market from my carriage, those are the only places I’ve been.

Beneath the sand lies my kingdom. But you can’t just dig your way in. It’s enchanted. Only a portal can take you there, and the portal gem is in my sceptre. Something I didn’t even know.

One day, I read about the surface. What was it like? I wondered. Then, something started tugging at me. I wanted to see it.

I snuck away, swimming up. And when I reached the top, I realised my kind was capped. I used my powers on the sand, but it didn’t give. The barrier between my world and the surface world. Agents and soldiers were teleported there, but people like me, teenagers, were kept away.

I used my tail to hit the sand wall, but it didn’t move. It was all worthless. Then my attention was drawn to my soldiers announcing that I was being taken away. I quickly tightened my disguise and swam home, just as my father was boiling with anger and my brother ordered more men to find me.

I successfully snuck back in, but Mioma was sitting on my bed, crying. She quickly turned at the sound of my entrance.

“Where have you been, Princess? The king is back!” Mioma exclaimed, cupping my face. “We were all worried! Viper said you weren’t with him. So where did you go?” she asked.

Before I could lie, she shrieked.

“I have to let the king and everyone know that you’re back!” she panicked, swimming away and locking my door, thrice the normal way.

I plopped onto my flower bed, inhaling deeply as I stared at the chamber ceiling.

“I need freedom. Maybe I can find it on the surface,” I muttered to myself.

I continued reading the book about the surface, the one I’d stolen from the library. It said that a portal could open, leading to the Earth, whatever that is. I skipped over the disadvantages and read that only a Pynix gem could open a portal.

I jumped up and looked at my sceptre.

“Oh!” I exclaimed, kissing the top of it, where the Pynix gem sat. “I’m free!” I yelled, plopping back onto my bed.

Then, someone knocked.

“Urg! Who’s there?” I called.

“It’s Kiki, Princess,” she said.

“Come in,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“The door’s locked.”

“Then use the window, like usual,” I suggested, swimming to it. “Oh! Window lock. Try again later.”

“It’s very important!”

“Let me guess… it’s about Koko,” I said weakly.

“Ah! How did you know?” she screamed.

As she started talking, I zoned out, staring at my sceptre, imagining what the Earth might look like. I checked the book’s instructions again, then rolled my glowing sceptre three times.

The portal opened.

“Ah!” I screamed excitedly, then quickly cupped my mouth.

Kiki exclaimed, “I know, right! I think he likes me too! We could elope together if the king doesn’t approve…”

She continued talking, but I was drawn to the portal. Without thinking about how I would return, I entered.

Your storytelling style is really engaging, especially the opening 👏 I’m excited to read more chapters.

Strong and intriguing opening with a unique underwater kingdom concept. Mia is a compelling protagonist, her lack of freedom, forced engagement, and desire to see the surface create immediate emotional and narrative tension. The world-building feels original and vivid, especially the portal and gem system.
The pacing is engaging, and the ending with her entering the portal makes you want to keep reading. Curious to see what happens next on the surface and how Mia will handle her new reality.
