Chapter 1: The Calm Before the Storm
~~~~~
Fabia stretched lazily in the campus library, her eyes scanning the pages of her textbook, though her thoughts wandered. She had promised herself that she’d study today, but her mind kept drifting to the same familiar place: Jungkook.
Her best friend since forever. The one person who knew all her quirks, all her secrets. The one person who was always there, whether she needed someone to vent to or just someone to sit in comfortable silence with. She couldn’t even remember when they had become inseparable, but it was the way it had always been.
Just then, she heard a familiar voice.
“Got room for me?” Jungkook’s voice carried over the quiet hum of the library as he slid into the seat across from her.
Fabia glanced up, raising an eyebrow. “Since when do you study, Jungkook?”
“Since now,” he shot back, grinning. “I figured it was time to catch up to my brilliant best friend.”
She rolled her eyes. “You mean catch up to me so you can copy my notes later?”
He smirked. “Smart move, Fabia. You’re catching on.”
They had this routine. She would study—he would distract her, just enough to make her work harder to focus. And then, just as quickly, he would ask for help when he realized he couldn’t make sense of any of it. This dynamic, the one that had always existed between them, had never really changed. They were comfortable, familiar.
But today, something felt different. Not in any overt way, but there was a tension in the air, a subtle undercurrent that wasn’t there before.
“Are you really going to help me?” Jungkook’s teasing voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
Fabia gave him a pointed look. “Yes, but only because you begged.”
“Fine,” he said with a dramatic sigh. “I guess I’ll get started.”
They spent the next hour in their usual back-and-forth rhythm: him asking questions, her offering sarcastic commentary, and them laughing at some of the more ridiculous mistakes he made. Everything felt... normal. Almost like it always had.
But as the hours passed, Fabia couldn’t ignore the gnawing feeling in her chest. It wasn’t anything she could quite put her finger on. It was just that—something. The way Jungkook had looked at her a little longer than usual earlier when he’d walked in. The way his presence seemed to fill the room with a weight she hadn’t noticed before.
But she didn’t say anything. Why would she? They were friends. Best friends. And that was all they needed to be.
“Hey, are you listening?” Jungkook’s voice broke through her thoughts again, pulling her back to reality.
Fabia blinked, giving him an apologetic smile. “Sorry, spaced out for a second.”
He shrugged. “It’s cool. You’re always on another planet. Just promise me you’ll actually help with this.”
“I promise,” she said, though she had no idea what she was agreeing to. The day had felt strange enough already without diving into whatever was building between them.
She glanced over at him, watching him scribble something on his paper. For a moment, she caught herself wondering if he was feeling it too, the shift in the air between them. But as quickly as the thought came, she pushed it away.
They were friends. And that was all they needed to be.
