Out of nowhere
The message arrived at 2:13 a.m.
No subject line. No sender.
Just two words:
“Are you there?”
The glow ofphone screen casts long shadows across your bedroom. Outside, the wind pushes against the windowpane like something trying to get in. She sit up, staring at the message. Her heart ticks up a notch.
She should ignore it. Delete it. Sleep.
But something keeps her thumb hovering over the screen.
