Chapter 1

In a small village in Kenya, lived the Thomas Family.

Knowing their roots and history was extremely important to the Thomas’s.

Princess Laina Thomas, the daughter of Barba and James Thomas had an insatiable appetite for knowledge.

Rita Laina’s Grandmother Matriarch of the Thomas Family really took pride in gathering her Family and sharing Thomas Family history.

Queen Nefertiti is Princess Laina’s Great Aunt!

Nelson Mandela is Princess Laina’s Great Grandfather!!

Rita believed strongly in the importance of knowing your history and learning from the past.

Growing up Rita dreamed of becoming a Scientist, Clara Rita’s mom was a Maid Earl Rita’s dad was a Car salesman.

Entertainment wasn’t intentional, when it came to showcasing black culture on television.

In High school, Rita applied for an internship at the American Science Institute

Afro’s, braids and locks were the hairstyles during that time period.

Unfortunately, racism was extremely prevalent with Jim Crow and segregation in the south!

Despite adversity, Rita rose through the ranks of the American Science Institute where She eventually became president.

More Women of color, went into science thanks to the Kenya Science Institute!
