Prologue

Run. She had to run. Away from here, this place that promised protection but held only cruelty. Cruelty she had dared to believe lay vanquished, a phantom of a forgotten past.

Tears streamed down her face. A desperate battle raged within her, a primal fury unleashed. She clawed, she bit, she kicked, a cornered beast fighting with the raw, untamed instinct to survive. She fought with a raw desperation a wild animal cornered. But the shackles cut deeper, invisible bonds of her past and the real, unyielding grip. Freeing? An illusion? Was her defiance just a final, frantic twitch against the inevitable?

The blow struck her, a bolt of icy lightning, but in the storm of her panic it was little more than a distant pain. Then the brutal hands, possessive and final, shoved her back into the yielding softness of the pillows, a false comfort that now felt like a burial shroud.

Her fear drove her to the abyss, she clung desperately. To escape. She had to escape, away from this cruel place.

“Enough, Fury, your resistance ends now.”

The harsh, guttural words barely pierced the roaring in her ears. Was this the end? A desperate yearning clawed at her soul. She wanted to live! To fight! To survive! Or... or to finally surrender, to sink into the oblivion of peace?

She barely registered the prick. The cold, invasive intrusion of the needle into her vein. Only the leaden weight of exhaustion that seeped into the very marrow of her fear. Trapped. Trapped in a body that betrayed her, a vessel that no longer obeyed, no longer belonged to her.

Her vision swam, the edges blurring, dissolving into a murky, silent sea. And as she sank, as the darkness claimed her, a chilling whisper echoed in the depths of her fading consciousness. Hate? Fear? Or... the insidious promise of release?

If trust was a ghost, would life even be worth fighting for?
