Chapter 1: Despite the Dawn

My eyes opened into the galaxy and adjusted to the constellation’s twinkles. Warmth and contentment surrounded me, acting as a blanket over my shoulders. My wings fluttered, shaking off the sleepiness and readying themselves for a beautiful new day. My gorgeous white feathers glittered and folded into the morning breeze as a smile found its way to my face. I led a life of consistency now, each day almost the same. My time on earth had ended a while ago but since, I evolved into an entity of purity. I had been chosen to repair, to protect and maintain. I was an angel.

Most things fell to my control. I was able to wish evil away and safegaurd those who asked for it. I comforted, I steered, I nourished. I listened, I nursed, I provided. Lifetimes of this had passed and I never longed for anything more - not until this very moment.

My face began to swelter and my hands began to shake. I inhaled as best as I could only to receive a shallow breath. The colors of the sky began to darken despite the dawn and I knew something twisted had been unleashed. A cool sweat hoisted from my body as an impossibly heavy feeling anchored my chest. I felt my heart rally in denial, begging to be released and begin an ordinary day.

This feeling was magnetizing me downwards, away from where I was designed to be. My eyes stitched shut as I attempted to focus on breathing but nothing would help. My entity was being summoned. A tear slipped down my cheek as I allowed for a slight descend. Lowering my altitude helped my breathing but worsened my unsteady heart. Little by little I fell lower and lower, but not without resistance.

Days had passed but I remained determined to fight this order. The world I had grown so comfortable in had now altered into a kaleidoscope, blurring the senses of my own reality. My wings had almost no power left and my bones felt brittle. I had been treading in space for too long and the tidal sphere was finally winning. An unheard scream augmented as I released all of my refrain. The speed of which my body was projected sent my mind into psychosis.

When I awoke, my cheek was pressed down into red, hot sand. My wings, tattered, but enveloping me. There was no breeze, no smell, no sound. Flatness as far as I could peer to see. Shadows lerked closely as there was more darkness than light. I had never been to this dimension before. My voice called out but quickly rested in the desert. Something inside of me was still tugging my chest though, enticing me to move forward and continue down the shadowed sands.

It was unknown how long I continued on for, but I stopped when I sensed something new. A shift in the magnetic energy, something more simple and delicate. A string. The urge to continue was no longer towing me but rather gently coercing me. My heart softened and my wings relaxed, no longer tensing with stress. There was someone or something needing me.
