Prologue

Whispers curled through the corridors of Elliot International School, soft but sharp enough to cut. Samantha kept her chin lifted, her friends close at her side, every step an act of quiet defiance. The stares followed, as if she had stolen something that didn’t belong to her.

Yesterday, she had been just another student.

Today, she was the top of Grade Ten.

And Keith—the school’s golden boy, its untouchable valedictorian—wasn’t.

The news had rattled the halls. The student council refused to believe it. To them, it was unthinkable that the honor could belong to a girl from a modest home, the daughter of a Filipino mother and a Chinese father who had walked away before she was born. Her mother had raised her alone until a kind man came along, loving her as his own and adopting her.

Life had never been easy. But Samantha had earned her place here—through flawless grades, a scholarship, and a voice in the school choir that could silence a room. The truth was simple, though no one wanted to admit it: her extracurriculars had tipped the scales. Keith, brilliant as he was, had no taste for sports, art, or performance.

The council fought it. The teachers proved it. In the end, they had no choice but to accept the verdict.

On the day of the moving-up ceremony, Samantha stood beneath the warm lights of the stage. Applause rolled over her, but her gaze was fixed on the boy waiting just beyond the crowd. Gavin—handsome, wealthy, perfectly out of her league—smiled as if she belonged nowhere else but in his arms. He pressed flowers into her hands, slipped a small gift into her grasp, and pulled her close.

In his embrace, the world felt safe. Perfect. Unshakable.

She wished the moment could last forever.

It wouldn’t.

Everything was about to change.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
