Prologue
The moon was dying.
It clung desperately to the heavens, a sliver of pale light flickering in the night like a breath struggling for life. Across the Shimmering Archipelago, the waters lay still, an unearthly calm settling over the land as if the sea itself held its breath, waiting. Shadows gathered at the edges of the world, drifting over quiet islands, and where the light of the moon once touched, darkness spread in its wake.
On the Isle of Ember, atop a jagged peak crowned by flames, an ancient brazier crackled and spat as if sensing the fading light above. The Emberhearts gathered in silence around it, their cloaks dark as coal, faces solemn and fearful as they watched the fire sway and struggle. The brazier was the heart of their power, a flame gifted to them by the gods themselves, but tonight, it burned fitfully, a reluctant blaze that fought against an invisible force.
Among them stood Kaelen, a young man with eyes the color of fire at dawn, his face illuminated by the uneasy light. His hand drifted to his arm, where a new, searing mark had appeared days before. The Flamebound, they called him in whispers. The first in generations. Yet he felt none of the strength he had been promised, only a cold, nagging emptiness that weighed on his chest and a deep, unshakeable dread that seemed to press on him from all sides.
Across the sea, hidden within the rocky cliffs of the moonlit shores, another gathering took place. The Lunaris elders knelt in the sand, eyes closed, hands pressed to the ground as if feeling the pulse of the tides beneath them. The ocean murmured quietly, as though speaking secrets only they could hear, and above them, the fading moon shone faintly over the waves.
Mira stood apart from the others, her gaze fixed on the silver thread of light on the horizon, the last remnants of the moon’s strength. She felt the weakness in her bones, the slow drain of power with each phase of the moon. Her connection to the tides, once as strong and natural as breathing, was slipping away. And with it, so was her hope.
It was then that the Eldest of the Lunaris turned to her, his eyes clouded with a darkness that reflected her own fear. “The bond is broken,” he whispered, a tremor in his voice. “The flame and the tide… they must be bound once more, or we all shall fade into shadow.”
Mira swallowed, her heart sinking at the weight of his words. The tale was as old as the sea itself—of the Flamebound and the Tide-caller, of two souls destined to unite the power of fire and water. A story woven into their songs and whispered to children as legend. But tonight, it felt less like a legend and more like a curse.
In the distance, the waves crashed harder against the shore, the beginning rumble of a storm. And in that moment, as the flame on Ember Isle shuddered and the moon flickered faintly above, a sense of foreboding washed over both clans—a chill that whispered of a darkness older than the stars, waiting to break free.
Far beneath the sea, in a cavern where no light had touched for centuries, a pair of ancient eyes blinked open.
The Umbradus starts awakening.
