Nicole McNamara is celebrating her seventeenth birthday with her brother Nate and her best friend Kassie Lang . Nate hears gunfire. He returns to his house only to find his parents dead.
"Hey, mister," shouted Nicole McNamara, "she likes you." She pointed to her long-time friend Kassie Lang.
Nate, Nicole's younger brother, shook his head. Nicole was always teasing older men about liking them. At the age of seventeen, Kassie had never had an actual boyfriend.
The man, who was about forty years old, had ridden by their house. Nate had seen him before, but didn't know him.
