Prologue

The rain was pouring down hard in New York. The sound of a car door slamming closed is heard from a nearby crosswalk.

"Goodbye, jerk!" I yelled at the face on the other side of the car window. The taxi sped off, leaving me stranded in the cold heavy rain. Usually the sound of rain felt soothing but not in this case. I was getting drenched and the sound of rain was drained out by the noise in my head. I looked up into the dark and gloomy sky and sighed.

"Why did it have to rain today?" The water continued to fall on my face. I looked down at my red converse, they were submerged in a huge puddle. My feet cold and wet now too, the cold started to creep over my body. Since I didn't bring an umbrella, I had to endure it. Stepping out of the ankle deep pool, I walked across the street to a nearby canopy. It was already late in the night, not many cars passed. The city was quiet besides the pitter patter of the rain. The many puddles on the street reflected of the bright colorful lights around me. I looked to my left and saw some store owners already starting to close shop. I placed my hand into my jean pocket, grabbing onto my phone. Pulling it out, I pressed the on button. To my rotten luck, it was dead.

"Damn it!" I cursed under my breath, frustrated that nothing was going right today. It was nearing 1 am and I had no idea where I was. I put my phone back in my soaked pocket and continued to walk in the rain. It wasn't as heavy anymore, more like a light drizzle now. I knew for sure I was going to be sick the next day.

My hair started to feel heavy with water and my fingers becoming pruny like my soggy feet splashing onto the wet pavement. Looking for an open store or cafe, I had finally stopped one that was open till 4 am. It was on the opposite side of the street.

"Thank god!" I shivered as I looked both ways and j-walked to the other side. The chime of the cafe's door opening filled my ears. The warmth enveloped my body as I closed the door behind me. The smell of coffee filled my nose.

"Good morning?" I said to the lady behind the counter. "Do you have a charging area for my phone?" She smiled and nodded, pointing to a far wall with an outlet. I said thank you and rushed over to it, immediately plugging my phone in. I pulled out the chair in front of me to sit down. I placed the phone on the table and waited. My body relaxed as the warmth slowly started to melt me. I could barely feel my feet and my clothes were sticking to me like glue.

Ugh... I probably can't make it to my classes tomorrow.

"Geez!" I huffed, throwing my arms in frustration. In defeat, I placed my head down onto the table and closed my tired swollen eyes.
