Prologue

The world is strange and cruel if you don’t know your way around. I know this fully. Also what you may know may be false. Everything is not as it seems. My name is Lilly Rein. I am fifteen years old and am a sophomore in high school. I have auburn hair and hazel eyes. My eyes change color with my mood though. I am basically vampiric pale and am freckled. I have a cute little freckle above my lip. I love swimming and reading. I am also an author. When other people my age stay in and watch television all day I am outside. Granted I am sitting in the forest and listening to music or reading but still. I have always lived in a kind of separate world from most people. Always spacing off and dreaming of other worlds for me to explore. When I was four weeks old I was put in an orphanage. My parents were young and reckless and I was a mistake. They never really wanted me. Miss. Delphine’s Home for Orphaned and Unwanted Children was my home for seven years. When I was seven years old a couple named Abigail and Michael Rein came to this home hoping to adopt a young girl. When we met Abigail instantly adored me and she knew we were destined to meet and two months later the adoption papers were signed and I had a home to call my own. While I was feeling happy in my new home Jared was being abused by his father Cole and his mother had fled without him. She shall remain nameless.

One day at school, we were in seventh grade, I sat at my table alone as usual and suddenly a boy sat across from me. He had red hair the color of copper and his eyes were like the prettiest blue sapphires. He was almost as pale as me and he had a spattering of freckles across his nose. He was kind of cute, in the ways of how he seemed so dreamy but that was before i knew him and before I learned he was more down to earth. He smiled and spoke in a British accent. “Hello. My name is Jared.”

“And I kind sir am Lily.” I blushed just thinking about fantasy books I have read and how the ladies in each book called their princes that in their first meetings. Now that I’m looking on that moment I wanted to mentally murder myself then kick myself into the depths of tartarus. Maybe just a little over dramatic but hey I am a drama queen so that small bit of embarrassment was normal in my profession.

He gave a definitely prince charming esque smile “Well my dear lady it is a pleasure to meet you.”

I began laughing “Someone knew what I was talking about.”

“I read Shakespeare.” He smiled.

“Ah. Alright then. That explains it. Well, I am wanting to be in drama in high school.” I told him.

“Well that is a mighty fine goal.” He grins.

I raise my eyebrow “What the heck? Are you an aspiring comedian or actor?”

“Nope.”

“Uh huh then. You might want to look at that for a career.” I said.

“Are you an exchange student?”

“No. I just moved from London England.” He replied.

Anyway I am in high school now and have failed to ask him out yet.

I have a little special talent that no one knows about. Okay… I sort of lied there. The one person who knows about what I can do is my best friend. His name is Jared Fiddler. Ah, yes Jared Fiddler. It’s actually a miracle that he even became friends with me. You see, due to the social status of every high schooler and there standards and cliques yada yada I am at the bottom of the food chain. While mr. handsome perfect here is on the top as one of the high school royalty. Now you’re probably going to be like how the hell did someone like me worm my way to that glorious top. I guess it was a combination of luck and higher power.
