KATARINA JAQUILINE FEE

KATARINA’S POINT OF VIEW

My name is Katarina Jaquiline Fee, but to almost everyone I’m known as Kat Marie Blackwood. Why you ask? Well if they knew my real name I would be hunted down, and slaughtered; like almost every other fairy has.

Which is why by the age of seven my entire existence changed in every possible way.

I’m finally back from summer break, and starting my senior year at Paranormal Academy: the boarding school for all supernatural creatures.

When I was younger and got my acceptance letter I was over the moon because I was finally getting out. Not that the headmaster didn’t make sure I was with the safest of creatures.

Did I wish I didn’t have to go to a new school alone, with the pain of watching everyone else get dropped off by their families? Of course I did, who wouldn’t. But this chance of a lifetime is all because of my parents and I can’t let them down!

The last time I was in a private school, before coming to Paranormal Academy, was when I was in first grade, which subsequently was the last time I was truly happy. I know that just because I’m in a ridiculous pleated skirt again doesn’t mean that I will no longer be in danger, or that things will be back to the way they were when I was younger, but they give me a sense of familiarity, and hope that things will be better than they have been. I mean I did move from the warmth of California to Massachusetts for this school.

My parents had a plan since my birth, that when I started sixth grade I would go to the most prestigious boarding school, the one that they not only both went to, but met, and fell in love at.

I’m what most people would call a blue blood. Both my Mother’s pixie fae, and my Father’s sprite fae families were loaded. Now because they’re all gone, I will have so much money, it will be coming out of my ears when I turn eighteen; and that scares me. But my supposed blood color, or the fact that my real last name is all over this school, doesn’t matter when it comes to the entrance exams. Which is why I had to study my ass off for years to be able to get into this school, but it payed off because I made it in; and have had this red brick paradise I’m staring up at has been my home for the last several years.

Walking through the halls of this palace, I walk straight to the place I’m looking at and throw open the doors to the front office. I am instantly greeted by Gracie, the long blond haired, with the bluest of eyes elf. Upon seeing me she leaves her desk and runs over to my waiting open arms.

“I’ve missed you so much Kat!” She exclaims.

“Me too Grace.” Pulling out of her embrace I ask, “Is she in?”

Smiling she answers, “Of course she is. Has she ever missed your annual meeting? It is the reason I’m here a month before school starts.”

Yeah, at a certain point I asked to come early so I could miss the love fest of dropping off your child, and could have some alone time.

Gracie then walks over and pushes a button under her desk. “Go right in.”

Pulling open her huge red oak carved door, I walk in and there she is. Shutting the door completely behind me.

The headmistress looks up, and upon seeing me the biggest smile comes upon her face. She then uses her magic to seal the room, and the black blinds closing over the windows, I let down my persona and show my true fairy self; as does the Headmistress.

Walking over to me in her fairy glory, I get the warmest hug from the person that has been like a second Mother to me (Jaquiline Winterbourne) the fairy from which my middle name comes, and the fairy that made sure I was safe for the past ten years; also known as my Mother’s best friend and headmistress of Paranormal Academy. Although to everyone else here, she’s known as Jacky Smith, for the fact that she’s a fairy like me.

See years ago all of the supernatural creatures (vampires, werewolves, djinns, elves, and mermaids/sirens) got together and had a big meeting. A lot of the creatures didn’t like the fact that the fairies had magic while the rest of them didn’t have that advantage, except for the djinn, but they can only grant wishes for others, nothing for themselves. So they all hatched a plan to eliminate us and set it in action all at once one day, so we didn’t see it coming, and they would have the upper hand. A couple of us got out, and are disguising ourselves as other creatures which has been working so far. Although a fae can always tell if another being is a fae, even disguised.

There were/are some creatures who don’t agree with the elimination of all fairy creatures, and is the reason that some of us survived. So although foster care isn’t how I saw my life going, the sympathizers (as we call them) haven’t been so bad to live with. It’s the disguising myself twenty-four seven that’s hell.

“It is so great to see you Katarina!” Letting go, but holding onto my shoulders she asks, “How have the Ashworths been treating you?”

“They’ve been pretty great. And it’s getting easier to pretend to be a vampire when that’s all you’re ever around.”

Jaquiline looks at me with a sad face, “I’m sorry you have to go through all of this Katarina. But I must admit, I would’ve pegged you’d like to be a djinn, elf, or mermaid before a vampire.”

Shrugging I retort, “Although for some reason no matter how hard I try, my magic hasn’t let me get rid of my fae pointed ears, so I have to constantly have long hair to cover them. But if you think about it vampires are fast, and they have amazing hearing, both things similar to a fae. Although I’d be a lot faster with my wings, but a little bit of magic helps keep up the ruse. Vampires are strong, and they have a class on turning into certain creatures, like a bat or raven, both I get to use my magic for without them knowing. I am really excited for the transformation class though…and the not getting killed for using magic is a huge bonus.

“I just hate having to hide my wings…and turn my hair strawberry blond, but it was the easiest to change it to the opposite side of the color wheel, and that was the closest match.”

Leading me to a chair to sit down, Jaquiline also sits down. “I know. And you have beautiful turquoise hair, just like your Mother’s, and your Father’s silver eyes. Although you do still look beautiful with strawberry blond hair, and blue eyes,” she offers trying to make me feel better.

“I’m sorry to see your wings are still black.”

I just shrug and run my finger along the top of one of my wings. “I know they usually match your hair, just like your pink wings. But I think with everything that’s happened, mine are probably going to stay black, and I’ve come to terms with that.”

Nodding she informs me, “Well we’ve put you in your usual private room, at the edge of vampire wing.”

“I’m not next to Him again am I?” I ask with hope, already knowing the answer.

“Katarina every year you want to have the same room, and we tend to keep the students in their same rooms, unless they have a problem. And you’re one of the fortunate ones that has a private room to herself, unless you want that to change?”

Letting out a huff, “I think you know I don’t. I don’t know how I would eat if I wasn’t in a private room?” I say thinking about my magical mini fridge I get my sweets from every night.

“I’m actually very impressed by you Katarina, you’ve gone through some horrible things, that you can’t really talk to anyone about. And I’m very sorry about that. But you pull off being a vampire very well.”

“Thank you! The not talking to people is hard, because of fairies not being able to lie, but I’ve gotten pretty good at going around the truth.

“But pretending to be a vampire isn’t really that hard. I just blend up the food I would eat, honey, cake, anything sweet really, and then make it look and smell like blood. And so when everyone is drinking their breakfast, so am I, they just don’t know it’s not blood. It’s just the fact that they don’t eat (if that’s what you want to call it) as much, so I eat later by myself…oh and my sleepwalking would be a problem if I had a roommate.”

Looking at me with curiosity, “So you haven’t kicked the whole sleepwalking thing? You know your Mother had the same problem.” She then pauses, “Just let me know if things get worsethan just sleepwalking okay?”

Confused I answer, “I do eat in my sleep sometimes, but I will let you know. Besides it only happens when I’m stressed. Which is why I’ll be locking my door every night just in case. Especially this year, I’m sure it will be more stressful than the last.”

Jaquiline then stands up, so I copy her.

“Well it looks like you have everything figured out. If there is ever anything you need, never hesitate to ask, or just come by to talk okay?”

She then comes and gives me a huge hug. Stepping back Jaquiline says, “Well we better change back, because I have to get back to work, and you have got to get to setting up your room.”

And the next thing I know I’m looking at Jaquiline, only in her djinn form. I sadly change back to my vampire form shortly after, and leave to get ready for the first day of school.
