Prologue
The Birth of Astraea
Before time had a name, before mountains held shape, before oceans breathed, there was only Darkness. And within that darkness, there were three.
The Mother of Earth, whose hands shaped soil and stone. The Moon, who wove dreams and tides. The Sun, whose fire lit all beginnings. They were the Higher Gods, eternal and vast. Yet even they were incomplete. For the world was still silent.
Until the night the Star fell.
It streaked across the void like a blade of light, burning with all colors of creation.
It shattered upon the darkness, and where its embers fell, a world was born.
This world was called Astraea. From the star’s broken brilliance, Magic flowed: pure in form, limitless in shape, bound to the heart of all living things. But magic was wild — too vast, too bright, too uncontained. So the Higher Gods called forth twelve lesser divinities, shaped from constellations, born from star-shards.
These became the Zodiac Gods, each given a domain, a land, and a people. The Twelve Nations. Each Zodiac God formed a nation that reflected their essence:
Aries, the flame-forged warriors
Taurus, the keepers of earth and craft
Gemini, the twin-born minds of mirror and song
Cancer, the moonwater healers of memory
Leo, the lion-hearted guardians of the Sun’s glory
Virgo, the archivists of law and purity
Libra, the judges of truth and balance
Scorpio, the shadow-bound masters of venom and will
Sagittarius, the star-sighted centaur wanderers
Capricorn, the horned watchers of the winter mountains
Aquarius, the river-thought innovators of flow
Pisces, the tidewalkers, whose bodies remembered the sea
These twelve peoples were not identical to humans — but not beasts.
When the world settled, the Higher Gods shaped the last people, called The Thirteenth Nation — Humans. Not from starlight but from earth, river, bone, and breath. Fragile. Mortal. Curious. Limitless in their hunger to understand.
The Humans were placed between the Twelve Nations, and told: “Magic may be yours, but only if you seek where you belong.”
Thus began the Ceremony of Belonging —every human, at adulthood, must stand before the Starstone, to see which zodiac light answers their soul.
And if the Starstone does not answer… they live without magic, forever earthbound.
And if the Starstone answers with more than one color… they are killed.
For the world believes:
“A fractured star is a dying one.”
The secret the world does not know. The Higher Gods saw what time would erase. The Star that birthed Astraea was not infinite. Magic is fading. Slowly. Quietly. Unnoticed at first. Therefore the Higher Gods made a final decision. They shaped a new star in human form.
A child who would one day hold all the magic of the dying world. This child would not know who they were. Their power would grow as the world dimmed. Their awakening would bring both salvation and ruin.
If the world discovered them, they would be worshiped. Then feared. Then destroyed. So the gods hid this chosen one among ordinary lives. No prophecy spoken. No omen written. No legacy carved. Just a quiet existence. Forgotten — until needed.
What even the Higher Gods could not predict was that another child would be born. A girl of the Thirteenth Nation, whose mother was the Moon in secret. A daughter of tide and twilight, who would not hold the power of the star but would become the gravity that shapes it.
And her name was Sera Laine.
