The House That Counted

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

The House That Counted by Lawal Iretomiwa is a dark teen horror story about four friends—Mason, Lena, Eli, and Zoe—who discover a mysterious house that suddenly appears on an empty lot in their neighborhood. The house seems alive and begins counting as soon as they enter, creating a sense of fear and urgency. As the friends move through the house, it traps them inside and reveals their deepest fears through strange rooms and terrifying visions. One by one, the house takes them, crossing their names out as it counts. The house appears to feed on fear and sacrifice. In the end, Mason chooses to stay behind so Zoe can escape. The house disappears the next morning, leaving no evidence behind. Although Zoe survives, she is left traumatized, knowing the house still exists somewhere and may return to count again. The story explores themes of fear, sacrifice, and the idea that some places remember the people who enter them.

Chapter 1

Briarwood Lane ended in an empty lot.

At least, it always had.

Mason had lived on that street for almost sixteen years, and the lot had never changed. Tall weeds. Broken glass. A leaning fence that everyone avoided. So when he saw a house standing there on the first night of October, his brain refused to accept it.

The house was tall and narrow, painted a dull gray. Its windows were dark—too dark, like they swallowed light instead of reflecting it.

Lena stopped her bike beside him.

“That wasn’t there before,” she said.

Mason nodded slowly. “I know.”

Behind them, Eli scoffed. “It’s October. Someone’s trying to scare people.”

Zoe didn’t speak. She was staring at the house like it had just blinked.

your ch 1 is shorter than you blurb and far more effective. you could add some details about the street but it gets too the point and has a strong hook.

suggestion. change the title of the title (own the cover) to white. the black colour is blending the background
