You are worthy enough

It was a bright sunny day on the month of June, that Yuna woke up from her slumber not aiming to do anything. The city from her window looked like a place bustling with joy, laughter, light, but there was no joy in Yuna, no laughter, she was lonely, she was alone in this vast universe or so she thaught. She is 27 now.

Yuna is a doctor by profession and a military official, she was a bright student, with a charming personality, and a smile as bright as the sunlight that lit up thw whole room. But now that smile it’s no where to be found. She did all her chores and walked out of her living space not to work but to wander around. She had taken a step or two, when a sight caught her eye, and a pain devoured her.

It was a familiar scene from a few years ago. It was her birthday and her 3rd anniversary as a millitary doctor. She was with her parents, going home after spending time together, as she had received a leave. They were in their car, talking when themost dreadful thing happened, an accident, no one survived but only her, she was only 24. Now she is witnessing the same thing, and the fact that she could not save them gripped her tightly, almost making her unable to breath. The stark terror of that day came back to her, her eyes welled up with tears, she couldn’t move a muscle, she passed out after sometime, only to wake up in a hospital bed surrounded by medical personal.

Yuna was suffering from clinical depression, extremely low self worth. She always feared she would bring harm to others. So she stayed locked up since her 24th birthday. It was the first time she came out in years, and this dreadful incident, made her believe all the more strongly that she is a bad omen, she locked herself again, only came out to have her dinner against her will, but just to survive, not to LIVE.

On the other side of the city was the Min family going crazy over their yougest son’s millitary enlistment day. Thier youngest son Min Hyun was a celebrated architecture and a musician. He was kind of a psychologist too. ” I am going to live now mother”, he said. His family blessed him and he set off to his mandatory military service, for two years. Hyun was not a person who would consider loving at the first sight. He is kind, compassionate, intelligent, witty, smart, has a good heart, but seems rude on the outside, making people believe he is cold. Well he is 27 years old, same as Yuna. They were childhood friends, but lost touch 3 years ago.

In the millitary camp, everyone is preparing to welcome Mr. Min Hyun and there at one corner is standing Yuna. He scanned the place as soon as he walked in, and his eyes immediately caught her. “Come to the stage please”, called a voice. He was the superior of the camp. Hyun went straight to the stage , accepted his mandatory millitary service and the hall broke into a round of applause.

After the ceremony, Hyun asked one of his roommate’s ( 3 of them shared a single room) , What’s so wrong with him?” “You will know soon” answered the other. The other room make Sammuel was an Australian -Korean, with an obvious dark past and present too. Nvermind, Hyun went to the rooftop at night, only to find Yuna there. Yuna noticing him hurried to go away, when he spoke. ” How long are you going to hide yourself from the world?” “Wh-what do you mean”,she shuddered. “You may think I am unaware of everything, but that’s not true. I know everything that happened, even the fact that you are suffering from clinical depression “. “Just go away Hyun, I am not interested to know anything about me again that I already am aware of, please leave me alone, it’s so exhausting living life it’s so annoying, I swear.”

Both of them were silent for sometime, then Hyun spoke, “If I say, I am not here to annoy you, I am here to help you out, help you realise your worth, help you comeout of the dreadful world that surrounds you. Would you please believe me? Just once?” Yuna’s eyes lit up at his words, but she was afraid, afraid that he would break her trust, but Hyun can understand people’s thaught. He said” You don’t have to be afraid , take your time, just come with me for now.

It was infront of a mirror that they were standing when Hyun spoke again, “What do you see Yuna?” “Myself” , she said.

“No , Hyun answered , “you see someone else, someone who is tormented from within, who has lost all of shine, who has lost her smile, rather they are dormant within her. I understand your pain, but its important that you learn how to make that pain of yours come to work for someting else. I am your friend am I not? Would you do me a favour?”

“Favour? Me? What is it ? go on say.”

“Please wear these clothes, I am going to style you in the same way you have always styled yourself”

“No Hyun please, I can’t bear to watch myself in these clothes! These are......your birthday present from your parents, your 24th birthday present, I know,” he cut her off.

“Please just once, listen to me Yuna”.

Yuna did as told. Hyun brought her in front of the mirror and asked “What do you see?” She could not help but burst into tears, but thus time someone was there to comfort her. “I am right by your side, nothing has happened darling, it is for you that I am here, I promise I will ensure I see the charming , cheerful, Millitary doctor Kim Yuna again.”

The next day, the training center bustling with sounds, creating a bedlum, there is Hyun, there is Yuna, who smiled a little for the first time in 3 years, when there eyes met. Hyun’s word were like a warm blanket to her, a cosy comfort. She had started to smile , a smile that was genuine, more as days passed by and started to volunteer in medical issues too, but her surgery skills, no that she could not manage to do as of now.

It was going well but oneday, that wired roommate of Hyun, Sam returned the camp, completely drunk. When confronted he started accusing Hyun verbally, even tried to slap him, he was bewildered. The person he loved the most, trusted the most in this camp after Yuna, how, how could he change so suddenly?

Days passed like this, turned to months, Hyun waiting every night for Sam only to return him completely drunk. Yuna saw everything, she knew everything but could not do anything. This annoyed her.

It was the first day of the new year, Hyun’s second year in the military camp.

“What’s so wrong with you Sam “? He crouched on the floor breaking into tears, a bitter memory of his friend stirred him. His friend , rather best friend, drowened himself in alcohol and drugs, and finally passed away when he was just 20 years old. Hyun held his head as all his memories flased before his eyes , still fresh. Yuna came up and slapped Jake to everyone’s amazement.

“Why , why did you slap him Yuna? He is sick, he needs treatment, we can’t give him up to the police, you said you believe me, so why , why the hell did you slap him? Why? Why are you so concerned about me?He shuddered, his breath heavy, eyes swollen and red from crying, he looked tired, too tired of everything going around, too tired of trying to help Sam out.

Yuna’s heart ached at the sight of him, she finally spoke, “You really want to know why I slapped him? It’s because of you Min Hyun, it’s because I love you, I love you so much, I have always loved you since the day we met at school. I don’t care if you have or have no feeling for me, but I sgall always love you. To think of the person who heloed me come out of my misery, breaking into tears, going through the same misery as me, it breaks me, my heart aches at this sight. You understand? I can’t see you like this. I am sorry , I am so sorry. ”

Hyun was baffled at Yuna’s sudden outburst, his tears now dried leaving marks on his cheeks, he tried to smile but could not. He went to the rooftop to find Yuna. “I... I am sorry for sh.. shouting at you, I swear I didn’t mean too, I ... was just... just too stressed. I am sorry”.“I know” she cut him off. It’s just that I love you, do you remember the day we first after 3 years? What do you see in the mirror Hyun? He could not speak or bring about to smile, only tears rolled down his cheeks. Yuna hugged him tight and he felt a glimpse of comfort.

They were admiring the night sky when Hyun spoke, “about youvloving me, I never knew that, I have always thought of you as a friend, I may not love you but maybe I do, I don’t know”.

Yuna scoffed “it’s alright mister, you don’t have to love me, just be my friend okay? Good night.”

Hyun sat at the garden bench , the same old way waiting for Jake but he never came that night.

The next day everyone left for a mission, but Hyun. Yuna went as he insisted. Hyun still longed for Jake. In this one year Jake came to him as a big brother to him, and he had a soft spot for him, that’s because, how much he was like Hyun’s best friend whome he lost years ago.

Hyun was sitting on the bench dozing off ,when he heard the door lock open.

It was Sam who has finally come back , drowning himself in alcohol, with another bottle in his hand.“Where were you?“,Hyun asked, not expecting an answer any way, but what Jake did afterwards , he was too shocked to see that. Sam put the whole alcohol from the bottle and was ready to throw a lighted matchstick in it aiming to burn down the whole military camp. Hyun tried to stop him, but ge hit him with the alcohol bottle instead, stabbed him at the stomach, pointed a gun at himself , Hyun tried to resist him, but failed. Unable to do anything he cut himself, hoping that it would stop Sam but no, it didn’t. Hyun finally shot Sam after an intense fight, and blood shed. He feel on the ground with Sam passed out beside him. Hyun was about to pass out from the exhaustion and blood loss, but he tried calling Yuna for once.

“Whe.....re are y..ou”, his voice trembled? ” We will be back in about an hour, what, what happened? Hyun is everything fine? ” “No, it’s............. not. Cou....ld you pl...e.....please come ba.....ck a li....ttle early? Pl...ase, it’s..........” ” Hyun Hyun hold on. What happened? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? HYUNNNNN? come on, please, are you hurt? Please answer me Hyun? I----- I am coming, please hold on for a bit more, please Hyun, please, don’t pass out, please, I am coming, please wait for me. Hyun ? Hyun?” ” I ........ I am .......... lis.......tening , I ..........“(the phone falls and a thud is heard at the other end). ” Hyun nooooo, please, no just wait I am here I am coming, please don’t leave me, you can’t, please.” Please You Stay Alive, please”.

Yuna rushed into the room and her heart skipped a beat, it was painted red with blood, and there was Jake being shot, passed away, and Hyun, he had so many injuries, covered inblood, as if he had a blood bath. Tears rolled down Yuna’s cheeks as she crouched Hyun and hugged him tight. The hospital reports showed Sam passed out due to alcohol overdose, but Hyun, he had 13 injuries, a brain injury, a stomach injury and what not, and it was only Yuna who would be able to perform these surjeries together.

Her whole body stiffened when she heard that, but she pushed herself. Only one thought whirled in her mind, what if she cannot save Hyun?

In the operation theater, she acted really professional though she did not perform surgeries for 4 years now, her hands trembled, her heart ached at the sight of her mist lifed person lying motionless on the OT table. It took 24 hours to perform all the operations, and all of them were succesful. But Yuna, she was still in disbelief. She was drowning in her thoughts, when the sister called out, “Patient is undergoing cardiac arrest”! Yuna rused in to the ICU, she started performing CPR, and liitle by liitle Hyun’s breath got steady. There was media all over the hospital, but Yuna dared not to go infront of them. She was exhausted, she stood infront of the mirror looking at her flush cheeks, she remembered what once Hyun told her.” I know whenever you look in to the mirror you feel miserable, but just smile for once, doesn’t it look good on you, doesn’t it make you feel better, it releases dopamine dear, you are a doctor , you know. Stand infront of the mirror, and say that you can do everything you wish to, see you will get strength. I promise “. She did that now too, in the exact same way, and decided she eould continue with her profession, her surgeries , she was determined, she would bring back that Hyun she knew.

She entered the ICU, only to see the love of her life, her cheerleader, her strength ,motionless on the bed, with so many things connected to his body, the monitir beeping steadily. She sat on the stool beside the bed and started taking to him, obviously he was unconscious. She started music therapy too, as Hyun loved music.

Days passed by, it was 3 months later that Hyun finally opened his eyes, and saw Yuna, her eyes glistening due to the tears. He spoke in his raspy voice “I am fine, see, you don’t have to cry. She I knew you could do this, I knew you would belive in yourself, you would be that Yuna I used to know, bold daring, bright, ambitious, my sunshine, you did it Yuna, you did. I am so happy, so proud of you”. ” Ahh it’s fine , now please stop talking , you still are a patient OF MINE, so no deviating from the rules I set.” Hyun chuckled and the room broke into laughter again.

It was months later, the night before Hyun would be discharged from his mandatory millitary service they were on the rooftop again when Yuna suddenly said. “Wanna play something? If you truly trust me can you dink all of these bear then I....” Sure” he cut her off. He was obviously drunk that’s not something nwe to Yuna, she had seen hin drunk before but this time it was different. Hyun pulled Yuna closer, and ther shared thier long awaited kiss. “I love you Yuna, please stay the way you are, please be mine” he whispered, “me too, I shall” Yuna whispered back.

Two months later, Yuna returned as a surgeon at a prestigious hospital, leaving, but not forgetting the military camp, her return, was Celebrated with so much grandure. She was honored with a prize, to commemorate her succes in performing 13 surgeries single-handedly. The hall broke into a round of applause, and there was his proud fiancé Min Hyun. Then only she belived that she did what she always wanted to, she belived in herself just as Hyun encouraged her to.That day marked a new beginning of her life.

And a year later, Jake who is now in the police custody for attempt murder suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, Yuna and Hyun went to meet him.

The next day was their long awaited marriage. Yuna dressed in a beautifu lwhite gown, her vail dropping from her head, and Hyun looking as handsome and tall he is, they both took their oath. It was a celebration day for everyone, but much more that a celebration day for them, our architect Min Hyun and our doctor Kim Yuna. It was a commemoration of their hardships, their love for each other, their beliefs in each other and themselves. It was a day which cannot be explained in words.

They returned to their normal life ever since, but not forgetting the fact that they are truly there for each other, not letting the playfulness, the spark, the youthfulness of the professional life, and their relationship die down.

Hyun made Yuna realise that she is Worthy enough and Yuna was there by his side when he needed her the most. They were childhood friends , friendship, a relationship, a love biuld with trust, staying by one another, for each other, clebrating joys and sorrows together. That’s what their oath was and that’s what everyone’s oath must be.
