Chapter 1

The gardens of Versailles lay cloaked in a heavy mist, the once-pristine hedges now wild and unruly, as if nature itself recoiled from the weight of history pressing down upon the palace. In the distance, the echo of distant guillotine blades was a grim rhythm underscoring the collapse of an old order. No longer did golden light dance on the fountains; only shadows stretched long across cracked marble. It was here, beneath the skeletal arms of an ancient oak, that Madame de Lorme awaited, her powdered hair undone, eyes sharp with a wary vigilance bred by years of watching the world burn around her.

She heard footsteps before she saw him—a cautious shuffle, heavy with the reluctance of a man who knew the cost of each step he took. Romain, once a fervent revolutionary with ideals too fiery for his own good, appeared from the fog, his coat threadbare, face smudged with soot from barricades far removed from these hallowed halls. His gaze flicked to hers with a flicker of recognition tempered by suspicion. “You summoned me, Madame?” His voice was low, weary.

Madame de Lorme offered a small, wry smile. “It seems these stones hold more memories than we care to admit. But we are not here to reminisce, monsieur. The court’s secrets are unraveling, and I believe you hold a key I need.”

Romain’s laugh was bitter. “And what would a noblewoman want with a revolutionary’s keys? To lock me away further?”

“Or unlock a future worth surviving for,” she replied, her tone softening. “There is more at stake than vengeance or redemption. There is a thread we must follow—one that could alter the course not just of Versailles, but of this battered nation.”

They shared a guarded silence, the mist swirling between uncertainty and fragile trust. In a world where loyalty was a currency heavier than gold and even hope felt dangerous, their alliance was the last ember burning in the ashes of a vanished world.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
