Chapter 1
Humidity clung like damp velvet to Gabriela Morales’ skin, weighing heavily in every step she took through the dense, rhythmic heartbeat of the jungle. Her fingers tightened around the yellowed parchment, its edges flaking away under fingertips slick from sweat and anticipation. This map, concealed for decades within her mentor’s prized possessions, now promised revelations whispered only in myth—an ancient temple lost amidst shadowy legends.
The previous night she had sifted through faded journals, deciphering strokes of graphite that drew meticulous illustrations: jaguar-headed idols, twisting stone staircases descending into black silences, and glyphs wrapped in creeping vines. Her mentor’s voice, once vibrant and wise, seemed to echo softly behind those pages, urging her onward. Against the murmured warnings of locals afraid of angering spirits long undisturbed, Gabriela had pushed into forbidden lands. Now, deep beneath towering ceiba trees, their branches gnarled and thick with vines, she wondered if bravery bordered on madness.
After cutting through another tangle of leaves with her machete, Gabriela halted abruptly, breath sharp and pulse quickening. Before her stretched a ravine, the gap terrifyingly vast despite the faded ink lines that marked it harmlessly on her map. A swinging rope bridge spanned across, grayed ropes frayed and boards splintered by ages past. Below, mist rose like ghostly fingertips, obscuring the jagged truths hidden far beneath the crest.
Drawing on slow, steady breaths to calm her racing heart, she took one cautious step onto the bridge. It creaked ominously beneath the weight of her left boot. The sound seemed to tremble into the void below, disturbing the whispers of the jungle as though they disapproved of her intrusion.
Halfway across, the stillness cracked—voices floated from the jungle’s edge behind her. Familiar urgency pitched them forward, undeniable proof that she was no longer alone. Gabriela recognized their clipped accents: ruthless treasure hunters known from her darker expeditions, rivals slavering for the unspeakable power within the temple’s belly.
Refusing hesitation, Gabriela gripped tighter, rapidly calculating her options. Retreat meant certain disaster, while the passage ahead whispered unknown threats. She took another cautious, deliberate step forward, determination flaring fiercely within her chest, and resolved to confront whatever ancient secrets lay waiting in the jungle’s dark embrace.
