Chapter 1- Age 11

I didn’t realize at the time that childhood had an ending.

Some people ease out of it slowly, like the sun setting at the end of a long day. Mine ended all at once — like a door slamming shut.

I was eleven when my parents’ marriage fell apart.

Old enough to understand what was happening, but too young to know how to carry it.

The house changed first.

It grew quieter, heavier. The kind of quiet that sits in your chest and makes it hard to breathe. Conversations turned into arguments, and arguments turned into silences that stretched for days. I learned to listen from my bedroom, trying to piece together what was happening from the sound of raised voices through thin walls.

No one ever really explained it to me.

One day everything was normal.

The next, it wasn’t.

I remember watching the adults in my life move like they were surviving something I couldn’t see. They were busy with their own pain, their own anger, their own grief. There wasn’t space for mine, even if they didn’t mean for that to be true.

So I did what children do when there’s no room for their feelings.

I learned to hide them.

I told myself I was strong.

I told myself I didn’t need anyone to sit down and ask if I was okay.

I told myself I understood.

But the truth was, I didn’t understand anything.

I didn’t understand why the family I knew could disappear so quickly.

I didn’t understand why love could change shape overnight.

I didn’t understand why I suddenly felt like I had to grow up faster than everyone else around me.

At eleven years old, something inside me shifted.

I stopped feeling like a child and started feeling responsible for my own survival.

I became quieter. More aware. More careful.

I paid attention to moods, to tones of voice, to the tension in a room. I learned how to stay out of the way. How to be “easy.” How not to ask for too much.

It was the beginning of a pattern I didn’t even realize I was forming — learning to carry things alone.

Looking back now, I can see that this was the moment everything changed.

Not all at once. Not dramatically.

Just slowly, quietly.

This was the age I began growing up too fast.

And once it started, it never really stopped.
