Prologue - Edge of Known Space - Helix Station

The screaming starts before the alarms. Dr Mara Vance is alone in Lab 7 when the stars outside the viewport blink out. Not dim. Not eclipse. Gone. The universe beyond the reinforced glass turns into a perfect sheet of black. “Echo,” she says, her voice trembling despite twenty years in deep space, “visual anomaly detected. Confirm external sensor failure.”

The station AI responds instantly. “External sensors functional. Visual obstruction unclassified.”

Mara steps toward the glass. Her reflection stares back at her… Pale, sleepless, brilliant. Behind her, lab lights flicker. Then something presses against the other side of the viewport. Not a ship. Not debris. A shape. Massive. Organic. Veined with faint blue light. And it is looking in. The screaming starts across the station comms.
