Chapter 1
Rajgarh stirred awake beneath a pale wash of morning light, the early sun stretching lazily across the quiet streets as Pride High School prepared to welcome its final-year students.
The iron gates stood tall and imposing,a familiar threshold for some and an indifferent structure for others.
It was the first day of Class 12,the year that carried expectations like a weight stitched into the fabric of the uniform itself.
Shakti Raghav walked toward the gates with measured steps, wired earphones resting in his ears, music humming low enough to mute the world but not entirely silence it.
His fatherβs recent transfer had brought him to Rajgarh without warning,as transfers often did in a military household.
Attachment was a luxury he had long ago learned to avoid.
New cities, new schools, new faces, none of them permanent enough to matter. His expression remained unreadable, sharp features composed in quiet detachment,as though he had already decided that nothing here would impress him.
Students gathered in clusters near the entrance, their conversations bright and animated, uniforms freshly pressed, ambitions louder than their laughter.
Shaktiβs gaze skimmed over them without interest. He stepped aside as a group hurried past, adjusting the strap of his bag slightly over his shoulder.
Pride High seemed exactly what he expected, polished on the outside, noisy at its core.
Across the road, the soft hum of a scooty approached.
Nayantara Vashishtha slowed near the gate, removing her helmet with practiced ease as strands of her hair fell over her shoulders.
Her presence drew subtle pauses in conversations around her,a shift so familiar she no longer acknowledged it.She had joined the school in Class 9,and within a year her name had become known for reasons she never encouraged.
Proposals followed her like rumors, assumptions clung to her like shadows, and most believed her distant nature was arrogance.
Only Reeva Nair and Arhaan Kapoor knew the gentler truth she rarely revealed.
Arhaan parked his bike beside her while Reeva climbed off, already complaining about the academic pressure that awaited them.
Tara offered a faint smile, adjusting her bag as her eyes drifted toward the entrance. That was when she noticed him.
The boy walking toward the gates wore the same uniform, yet something about him felt unfamiliar.
There was no attempt to blend in,no nervous scanning of the campus,no curiosity in his stride.
He moved as though he had already decided this place would not matter to him.
For a fleeting second their gazes nearly aligned, but she looked away before the moment could solidify.
New admission, she assumed, dismissing the thought almost instantly.Pride High had begun admitting a few scholarship students each year, and she had seen enough reserved faces to form quiet conclusions.
Without another glance, she started her scooty and moved ahead toward the parking area, Arhaan riding alongside her.
As they sped forward, the rush of air brushed past Shaktiβs shoulder. He instinctively stepped aside, irritation flickering briefly across his face at the careless speed.
His eyes followed the scooty for a fraction longer than necessary. He noticed the confidence in the way she carried herself, the effortless way others seemed to orbit around her presence.
He removed one earphone, not out of curiosity but mild annoyance.
He watched them disappear through the gates, the echo of their laughter lingering faintly in the morning air.
It was not their confidence that unsettled him,nor the vehicles they rode.He came from a family where rank and reputation carried weight, where his fatherβs position as a lieutenant demanded discipline and his grandfatherβs years as a principal had shaped generations.Status had never impressed him.
What irritated him was the recklessness.
The speed at which they rode, the way their conversation continued loudly as though the crowded entrance were an empty road, the careless ease in their movements.
It felt unnecessary, untidy, undisciplined.Pride High,he decided, was going to test his patience more than his intelligence.
He placed the earphone back in and continued walking.
Neither of them turned around.Neither felt the need to.Yet in those passing seconds, judgments had already been made, silent and unchallenged.
The first day of Class 12 had begun not with conversation or collision, but with indifference sharp enough to leave a mark neither of them yet recognized.
The first lecture of the day carried the usual mixture of restlessness and forced attention. Class 12 Humanities settled gradually into their seats as the ceiling fans hummed above them, pushing around warm September air scented faintly with chalk dust and fresh notebooks.
Conversations softened when the class teacher, Mrs. Mehra, walked in with her usual composed authority, her spectacles resting low on her nose as she placed the attendance register on the desk.
Tara sat beside Reeva,Arhaan occupying the desk just behind them. She was flipping through her new notebook, pretending to focus, while Reeva whispered exaggerated predictions about board exam doom.
The classroom buzz felt ordinary, familiar, predictable.
Until the door opened again.
Mrs. Mehra paused mid sentence and looked toward the entrance. βYes,come in.β
Shakti stepped inside, posture straight yet unbothered, his expression calm in a way that almost bordered on detached. The room reacted the way rooms always do when something new enters them.Conversations halted and Curious eyes turned.
A few whispers ignited instantly and died just as quickly.
Tara looked up without thinking.
So the unfamiliar face from the gate was in her class.
Mrs. Mehra adjusted her glasses and addressed the students.βClass, this is Shakti Raghav. He has recently transferred to Pride High School.I expect you all to make him feel welcomed and comfortable.β
Welcomed.
The word lingered in the air with a politeness that did not quite reach the studentsβ expressions.
Shaktiβs gaze swept across the room once, measured and unreadable. He offered a brief nod rather than a smile. βGood morning.β
His voice was steady,low,controlled.
Reeva leaned slightly toward Tara and whispered, βHandsome man's energy isn't that high.β
Tara did not respond. She simply observed.
There was nothing flashy about him.No attempt to impress. No nervous shifting. He stood there as though introductions were a formality he did not particularly care for.
Mrs. Mehra gestured toward the empty seat near the window, third row from the back. βYou may sit there.β
As he walked past the rows of desks, the faint
scent of something clean and sharp followed him.
A few girls exchanged looks.Arhaan raised an eyebrow in mild interest.
Tara noticed that.
Shakti took his seat without a word, placing his bag down neatly. His gaze shifted briefly toward the window,as though the outside world was more compelling than the inside one.
For a fleeting second, his eyes met Taraβs.
Neither looked away instantly this time.
There was no smile. No acknowledgment.just a silent assessment,as though both were recalculating the assumptions they had made that morning.
Then Mrs. Mehra began the lecture.
Chalk touched the board.Pages turned. The classroom returned to its rhythm.
But something subtle had changed. The unfamiliar face was no longer outside the gate.
He was inside the story now.
