Chapter 1: A match chance
Chapter One: A Match by Chance
The rain tapped softly against the window as Clara lay on her couch, her phone resting in one hand and a cup of tea growing cold on the coffee table.
Another long day at work had come to an end.
At thirty-nine, her evenings were always the same. She returned to her small apartment, changed into comfortable clothes, cooked a simple dinner, and spent the rest of the night alone. It wasn’t the life she had imagined when she was younger, but it was the life she had learned to accept.
With a quiet sigh, Clara unlocked her phone and opened an international dating app.
She had downloaded it only a week earlier after a friend jokingly told her, “Maybe your soulmate lives in another country.”
She didn’t really believe it.
Most of the profiles she saw were quickly forgotten. Some seemed fake, while others were only interested in appearances. After nearly twenty minutes of swiping, she was about to close the app.
Then a notification appeared.
“It’s a Match!”
Clara blinked in surprise.
She tapped the notification.
A young man smiled back at her from the screen. His profile read:
Leon
Age: 20
Country: Germany
Clara’s eyes widened.
“Twenty?” she whispered.
There had to be a mistake.
She looked at his profile again. Leon had bright blue eyes, messy brown hair, and an easygoing smile. His biography was short.
“I enjoy traveling, photography, and meeting people from different cultures. Life is too short not to make new friends.”
Clara shook her head.
“Nineteen years younger than me… Why would someone like him match with me?”
She was about to put her phone down when another notification appeared.
Leon sent you a message.
Her heart skipped a beat.
She opened the chat.
“Hello, Clara. Nice to meet you. I hope you’re having a wonderful evening.”
There was no cheesy pickup line.
No inappropriate comment.
Just a polite greeting.
Clara smiled before typing her reply.
“Hello, Leon. Nice to meet you too.”
A few seconds later, another message arrived.
“I wasn’t sure if you’d reply. Thank you.”
Clara laughed quietly.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Because you’re beautiful, and I thought someone like you would ignore a stranger from Germany.”
She stared at the screen, surprised by his honesty.
“I’m actually more surprised that someone your age wanted to talk to me,” she admitted.
There was a brief pause before Leon replied.
“Age doesn’t matter when getting to know someone. I liked your smile. You look kind.”
For the first time in a long while, Clara felt her cheeks warm.
Their conversation continued naturally.
Leon asked about her country, her favorite foods, and what she enjoyed doing after work. Clara asked about Germany, his university life, and why he enjoyed photography so much.
Hours passed without either of them noticing.
Outside, the rain had stopped.
Inside, Clara was still smiling at her phone.
When the clock struck midnight, Leon sent one last message.
“It’s getting late for you. You should get some rest.”
“You’re right,” Clara replied.
“Can I message you again tomorrow?”
She looked at the words for a moment before answering.
“I’d like that.”
“Then… good night, Clara.”
“Good night, Leon.”
As Clara placed her phone on the bedside table, she couldn’t explain why she felt different.
It had only been one conversation.
Just two strangers from opposite sides of the world.
Yet somehow, that ordinary evening no longer felt lonely.
Neither Clara nor Leon realized it then, but that simple “hello” was about to change both of their lives forever.
