THE MAN WHO COULD SMELL DEATH

THE MAN WHO COULD SMELL DEATH

Haruto Kurosawa had spent years studying things that humans could not explain.

But never once had he believed a man could smell death.

The thought should have sounded ridiculous,a myth.

Yet the report sitting on his desk challenged everything he believed.

Haruto adjusted his glasses and stared at the file in front of him. The title alone was enough to make most experienced researchers hesitate.

“You are actually reading that ?”

The voice pulled his eyes away from it

“When did you come..?”

“Long enough to watch you stare the file so intently without blinking maybe..?”

He swiftly brought his eyes back to the-report “I was thinking” he said

“What..? About the man who can smell cyanide..?”chuckled Dr.Sato

Haruto looked back at Dr. Sato “No I was checking whether the information was accurate”

Dr Sato placed coffee mugs beside him and leaned against the desk.

“You contradict what you say Mr. Sincere”

“You always say you don’t believe impossible things”

Haruto carefully took a sip of coffee “Because I believe most impossible things have an explanation”

“And this..?” Dr Sato raised his eyebrows quirkily.

Haruto went silent for a moment and

“That’s what I want to find out” he said.

Where Dr Sato saw the most determined eyes with blend of curiosity in it.

He was so proud of his student who went far ahead from his stature of post in science despite his age.

“Okay then I’ll leave you alone to dwell upon the matter Mr. Sincere”.

“I really think you should stop calling me THAT old man” Haruto checked Dr Sato and leaned towards last draw of his table in search of pen.

“Ya ya” Dr Sato scoffed and went back to his room.

The tables were turned upside down in search of a pen.

The neatly yet chaotically organized table was now looking more chaotic than ever.

“Ha finally found it” came Haruto from the Tv station behind his table after picking up the old pen.

There was a huge accident in Kawasaki involving 2 injured faculties where a 24 year old man reportedly identified the presence of cyanide before any laboratory equipments could do. This incident has sparked nationwide attention with experts debating him as a human detector since he……..”

“A human detector…” mumbled Haruto.

He began going through every reports he borrowed from his sensei.

He analyzed them thoroughly with the intent not to leave any exception.

The deeper he dug the pit of this mysterious cyanide detector the more his eyes glint with excitement.

The excitement to meet this mysterious Mr.Aoi mizuno grew more.

Surprisingly the photo in the newspaper caught the attention of Haruto rather than the big headlines.

“His eyes are tired and lonely”he sighed and folded them into tiny paper and tucked them into his lab coat safely.

His thoughts were jumbled as to when to meet or will he be able to meet this man of mystery…!

“Dr. Kurosawa shall we close the equipments since it is nearing 5PM…?”asked his assistant hesitantly.

“Sure” stern yet with a caring voice replied Haruto.

Gleamed with happiness his assistants immediately began packing up the laboratory.

“I will lock the lab you guys can leave after you pack your things”said Haruto with a warm smile.

The assistants ran to catch the bus to not miss them after waving bye to Haruto.

He watched them go out through the window and reach till the station which was opposite to the lab of the university.

Meanwhile….

Crowd had gathered around a young men who was lying unconscious on the pavement.

“…I can hear people whispering..”

His eyelids fluttered open.

To becontinued….

I'm confused. Did Haruto see the unconscious man while gazing out the window? Maybe I missed something? Okay, we have a supposed man who can smell poison. cyanide, to be exact, hopefully following so far. But haruto doubts such a thing can exist.

which proves Haruto is a scientist who keeps his wits about him at all times. Good tension building with the last paragraph. Makes the reader want to turn the page... introduction into the story was compelling and plausible.
