A NEW BEGINNINGS

(This is a work of fiction. All characters, events, organizations, and locations in this story are fictional. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or real institutions is purely coincidental.)

.....

"Ladies and gentlemen, we will be landing at Incheon International Airport in approximately fifteen minutes. Welcome to Seoul, South Korea."

The captain's calm voice echoed through the cabin, pulling Aryan Mehta out of his thoughts.

He slowly opened his eyes and turned toward the airplane window.

The view stole his breath.

Below the clouds, the city of Seoul shimmered beneath the soft golden light of dawn. The Han River flowed gracefully through the heart of the city, reflecting the first rays of the rising sun. Endless rows of skyscrapers stretched toward the horizon, their glass walls glowing like polished mirrors.

Aryan smiled.

"So... this is Seoul."

For years, this city had existed only in photographs, documentaries, and Korean dramas. Now, it was real.

He was finally here.

Aryan Mehta was nineteen years old. Standing nearly six feet tall with a lean athletic build, he had warm brown skin, neatly styled black hair, and calm dark eyes that reflected determination more than confidence. He wasn't someone who spoke loudly or tried to impress others. His strength came from patience, discipline, and an unwavering belief in his dreams.

He looked down at the old silver watch on his wrist.

It wasn't expensive.

But it was priceless.

His father had given it to him on the day he left India.

"No matter how far you go," his father had said, "this watch will remind you that home is always waiting for you."

Aryan gently smiled at the memory.

Six months earlier, his life had changed forever.

An email from Haneul National University had appeared in his inbox.

Congratulations! You have been awarded a full scholarship...

He had read those words over and over again, unable to believe them. Years of hard work, sleepless nights, and endless determination had finally paid off. His parents had celebrated with tears in their eyes, and his teachers proudly wished him success.

Today, that dream had become reality.

A gentle vibration passed through the aircraft as its wheels touched the runway.

Aryan had officially arrived in South Korea.

After completing immigration and collecting his luggage, he stepped outside the airport.

A cool morning breeze welcomed him.

Unlike the humid weather he had left behind in India, Seoul felt fresh and peaceful. The streets were spotless. People walked calmly, buses arrived exactly on time, and the city moved with quiet discipline.

Everything felt unfamiliar.

Everything felt exciting.

Instead of taking a taxi, Aryan chose the Airport Railroad Express. He wanted to experience Korea the way local students did.

During the journey, he sat beside the window, watching the city unfold before him.

Modern apartment buildings stood beside quiet neighborhoods. Cozy cafés opened their doors as office workers hurried toward subway stations. Students wearing university hoodies laughed together while cyclists crossed neat riverside paths.

Every station announcement was made in Korean first, then English.

Aryan quietly repeated each Korean sentence under his breath, determined to improve his pronunciation.

He wasn't here as a tourist.

He was here to build a new life.

Nearly an hour later, he reached the district where Haneul National University was located.

Pulling his suitcase behind him, Aryan walked along a tree-lined road leading toward the campus.

Autumn had painted the leaves in shades of crimson, orange, and gold. A gentle breeze carried fallen leaves across the pavement, creating a scene that looked like a painting.

Then...

He stopped.

Standing before him was a magnificent stone gate.

Carved into it were four elegant words.

HANEUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

For a long moment, Aryan couldn't move.

Students from different countries passed through the entrance, chatting in different languages, carrying books, coffee cups, and dreams of their own.

Beyond the gates stood beautiful academic buildings, peaceful gardens, a sparkling fountain, and a campus filled with endless possibilities.

Aryan tightened his grip on his suitcase.

His heart was racing.

Everything he had worked for...

Every sacrifice...

Every late-night study session...

Had brought him to this exact moment.

He looked up at the university one last time and whispered softly,

"Mom... Dad... I made it."

Taking a deep breath, Aryan stepped through the gates of Haneul National University...

Without knowing that this place would give him unforgettable friendships, his first love, painful betrayals, and a mystery that would change his life forever.

Sharda: I really enjoyed the pace of this story. It was mostly realistic, but It was tough to wrap my head around that a 13-year-old boy would be so intuitive and a friend to his mom.
