Introduction

The gates opened without a sound, yet to Stephanie, it felt like a verdict had already been passed.

She sat still in the car, her fingers tightly intertwined, her knuckles pale. Her eyes slowly lifted to the mansion ahead-huge, polished, intimidating. It stood like a reminder that she did not belong. Not in this world.

Beside her, Smith remained calm, almost too calm. His face showed no trace of the tension clawing at her chest. He simply stared ahead, his grip firm on the steering wheel.

"This is my home," he said.

Stephanie forced a faint nod.

"I can see that."

Her voice barely held together.Six years of loving him, believing in him, trusting him. She had imagined this day so many times-but never like this. Never with fear sitting heavily in her chest.

The car stopped and silence followed.Smith stepped out first. Stephanie hesitated before opening her door. The air outside felt sharp, like it carried judgment.

They walked side by side, but she felt alone. The door opened before they reached it. A maid stepped aside, bowing slightly.

They entered. The sitting room was vast and spotless, everything arranged with precision. It felt less like a home and more like a place where mistakes were not tolerated, and then she saw them.

Mr. Hale John sat upright, his expression already hardened. Mrs. Hale Juliet sat beside him, her posture elegant, her face unreadable but cold.

Their eyes settled on Stephanie and in that moment, she understood. She was not welcome.

"Father. Mother," Smith said. "This is Stephanie."

Stephanie swallowed and stepped forward slightly.

"Good afternoon, sir... ma."

Her voice was soft.No reply came.John's gaze moved slowly over her, from her hair to her shoes, as if measuring her value and finding nothing.

"So this is the girl," he said at last.

Stephanie felt her stomach tighten.Smith straightened.

"I brought her here because I want to marry her."

The words dropped heavily into the room.Juliet's brows lifted slightly, then lowered in disapproval.

"Marry her?" she repeated.

John gave a short, dry laugh.

"Smith, you cannot be serious."

Stephanie's chest tightened. She clasped her hands tighter to stop them from shaking.

"I love her," Smith said.

For lips curved faintly, but there was no warmth in it.

"Love does not determine marriages in this family."

John leaned forward, his voice sharper now.

"Do you even know where she comes from?"

Stephanie's breath caught.Smith said nothing and John continued.

"Her mother, Racheal. A woman without dignity. A woman known for disgrace."

Stephanie flinched, her eyes stinging instantly.

Juliet added calmly, "A child born out of wedlock. That is her background."

A tear slipped down Stephanie's cheek before she could stop it.She wiped it quickly, but more followed.

"I... I didn't come here to cause trouble," she said, her voice trembling.

Juliet's gaze hardened.

"Then why are you here? To trap our son?"

Stephanie shook her head quickly.

"No. I love him."

John scoffed.

"Girls like you don't love. You look for opportunity."

Stephanie felt as if the ground beneath her was shifting.Smith stepped forward slightly.

"That's enough."

But John ignored him.

"You will not bring this shame into my family."

Juliet crossed her legs gracefully.

"There is already a suitable woman for you," she said to Smith.

Stephanie's heart tightened painfully.

"Melinda," Juliet continued.

The name echoed in Stephanie's mind.

"Her father, Bryant, is a billionaire," John added. "If you marry her, this family will gain more than you can imagine properties, investments, companies."

Juliet nodded.

"A future worth having."

Stephanie's tears fell freely now.Smith's jaw tightened.

"I don't want Melinda."

Juliet's eyes narrowed.

"You will marry her."

"No."

John's voice rose sharply.

"Enough!"

The room fell silent again.John leaned forward, his voice low and firm.

"If you disobey us, you will lose everything."

Smith's expression flickered.

"Your position in the company," John continued. "Your wealth. Your name."

Juliet added quietly, "You will be disowned."

Stephanie's heart sank.

"You will walk away with nothing," John finished.

The silence that followed was suffocating.Stephanie slowly turned to Smith, her eyes filled with tears, searching his face for strength and love.

But what she saw instead was fear off losing everything. Her chest tightened.

"Smith..." she whispered.

He looked at her.For a moment, it felt like time paused.Six years of memories passed silently between them. Then his gaze shifted. He looked away.

"I..." he began, his voice uncertain.

Stephanie shook her head slightly, her lips trembling.

"Don't," she whispered.

But he continued.

"I don't think this marriage will work."

The words shattered her.Her eyes widened, disbelief flooding her face.

"You must be out of your mind," she said, her voice breaking. "After six years... this is what you say to me?"

Smith said nothing. He couldn't even look at her.

That silence hurt more than anything.Stephanie let out a broken breath, tears streaming uncontrollably.

"So everything... all those years... meant nothing?"

Still nothing. Her heart broke completely and just as the weight of it all became unbearable.

The door behind them opened and Everyone turned.Footsteps followed, slow and confident.A woman walked into the room.

There was tension as something deeper was about unveil.Stephanie's heart began to race again, panic rising within her.Her fingers curled slightly as fear settled deep in her chest ass everything was about to get worse.
