CHAPTER ONE: CONTAINMENT
Jonah Vale should not have been inside Halcyon Biologics after midnight.
Technically, neither should half the things stored beneath it.
He stood beneath a flickering fluorescent light with a screwdriver between his teeth, staring into an electrical cabinet.
“Whoever wired this deserves prison.”
The security guard behind him laughed.
“You say that every shift.”
“Because every shift I find something worse.”
Jonah removed the screwdriver.
“Emergency backup has been bypassed.”
“That bad?”
“If the primary grid dies, the lower laboratories lose containment.”
The guard stopped smiling.
“Containment of what?”
Jonah glanced toward the reinforced doors at the end of the corridor.
“Above my pay grade.”
His temporary contractor badge read:
JONAH VALE — SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE
Thirty-two.
Electrical systems technician.
No security clearance beyond what was necessary to keep the building from catching fire.
Exactly how Jonah preferred it.
He repaired machines.
Machines generally told you what was wrong.
People lied.
The lights died.
Jonah froze.
The corridor plunged into darkness.
Three seconds later, red emergency lighting activated.
An alarm began.
Not fire.
Not evacuation.
Something deeper.
Mechanical locks slammed shut throughout the facility.
The guard reached for his radio.
“Control?”
Static.
Jonah looked toward the electrical cabinet.
Backup power should have activated.
It hadn’t.
“That’s impossible.”
Then something struck the reinforced door.
Once.
The guard stared.
“What was that?”
Another impact.
Harder.
The steel bowed.
Jonah stepped backward.
“Not electrical.”
The door exploded outward.
The guard fired.
Jonah had never heard a gun fired indoors before.
It was louder than movies.
Sharper.
Ugly.
Three rounds disappeared into darkness beyond the door.
Something moved.
Black.
Fast.
The guard screamed.
Jonah saw him lifted from the floor.
Not by hands.
By strands.
Thin black cords wrapped around his vest and threw him into the wall.
His weapon skidded across the floor.
Jonah ran.
No bravery.
No curiosity.
He ran.
The lower laboratory was chaos.
Glass everywhere.
White-coated scientists sprinting through emergency lights.
One woman shouted:
“VR-7 breached!”
Another:
“Where’s Wren?”
“Evacuated!”
Jonah reached the stairwell.
Locked.
He swiped his badge.
Denied.
“Come on.”
Denied.
Behind him, gunfire erupted.
Then stopped.
Something wet moved across the ceiling.
Jonah slowly looked up.
Black material crawled over ventilation ducts.
Not liquid.
Not solid.
Both.
It moved like muscle without bones.
A pale line of blue light pulsed within it.
Jonah backed away.
“No.”
The organism dropped.
He ran.
He reached Laboratory Seven.
The door opened automatically.
Jonah stumbled inside.
Then stopped.
Rows of containment chambers.
Most empty.
Some shattered.
One still active.
Inside floated something shaped vaguely like a human nervous system wrapped in black fibers.
Jonah stared.
A monitor displayed:
PROJECT SYMBIOSIS
SUBJECT VR-7
NEURAL COHERENCE: 98.7%
The black material behind Jonah entered the room.
He turned.
It flowed across the floor.
Toward him.
Jonah grabbed a fire extinguisher.
“I’m warning you.”
The organism stopped.
He stared.
It seemed almost curious.
Then a gunshot came from behind him.
The round passed through Jonah’s side.
For a second—
nothing.
Then pain.
He collapsed.
A man wearing black tactical armor stood in the doorway.
“VR-7 located.”
Jonah pressed his hand against his side.
Blood poured between his fingers.
The tactical officer aimed toward the organism.
“Containment team inbound.”
The black mass changed.
It moved.
Not toward the officer.
Toward Jonah.
“No.”
Jonah tried crawling.
Too slow.
It touched his hand.
Cold.
Then burning.
Black material shot across his skin.
Jonah screamed.
It entered the wound.
His veins turned dark beneath his skin.
The tactical officer shouted:
“SEPARATE THEM!”
Jonah’s back arched.
Something traveled through his bloodstream.
His chest.
His spine.
His neck.
His skull.
Pain beyond anything he had ever known.
Then—
silence.
The gunshot wound closed.
Jonah stared.
The tactical officer stared too.
“What the hell?”
Jonah looked at his blood-covered hand.
The hole was gone.
The officer raised his weapon.
Jonah whispered:
“Wait.”
He fired.
The black material erupted from Jonah’s shoulder.
A hardened shield formed before Jonah even understood what was happening.
The bullet flattened against it.
Jonah stared.
The officer fired again.
Black armor raced across Jonah’s arm.
His hand changed.
Fingers lengthened beneath an organic sheath.
Not monstrous.
Not human either.
Jonah stumbled backward.
“Stop!”
The officer advanced.
The black substance reacted.
A tendril struck him across the chest.
He flew through the glass partition.
Jonah stared.
“I didn’t—”
His transformed hand trembled.
Then the black material withdrew.
Back beneath his skin.
Gone.
Jonah collapsed to his knees.
The laboratory alarm changed.
BIOLOGICAL INTEGRATION DETECTED.
HOST STATUS: UNKNOWN.
Jonah looked at the monitor.
The words updated.
VR-7: CONTAINMENT FAILURE
Then:
HOST ACCEPTED
Jonah’s breathing stopped.
“No.”
The monitor changed again.
SYMBIOTIC COHERENCE: 100%
Something moved inside his chest.
Jonah clutched it.
Not pain.
Awareness.
Like another heartbeat beneath his own.
Then he heard something.
Not through his ears.
Inside his head.
A sound.
Not language.
Not yet.
A feeling.
Alive.
Jonah froze.
“What?”
Silence.
Then again.
Closer.
Stronger.
Alive.
Jonah looked around the empty laboratory.
No one.
His voice shook.
“Who said that?”
The answer came from inside him.
You.
A pause.
Then—
Us.
The lights went black.
