Chapter 1
“Son, explain to us again what happened. How did this happen?” Cop #1, whose name was Detective Ransom, (“Call me Mike,” he said) was standing in the corner. Cop #2, whose name Devon couldn’t remember, sat across from him. Occasionally, he would see a set of eyes peer through the small square window on the metal door that led out of the interrogation room and into the hallway.
“I can’t,” Devon said, his eyes on the table top. He didn’t look up.
“Did you two have a fight? Your dad says you two got along really well; did something happen between you?”
Devon shuffled his feet. He told them a hundred times he didn’t remember how his step-brother ended up with one of their mom’s knitting needles buried into his brain by way of his left eye.
It was 1976. Devon was 11, and his step-brother David was dead.
