Chapter 1

LILA

The Secret Behind Her Loneliness

Chapter One — The Girl Who Was Always Alone

Lila was a young girl who had almost forgotten what it felt like to have a friend.

Every morning, she woke up in the same quiet room, looked through the same window, and watched other children walking together down the street.

They laughed.

They talked.

They chased one another.

Sometimes they stopped to share snacks or whisper secrets.

Lila would watch them from behind the curtains.

She wanted to join them.

More than anything, she wanted someone who would look at her and say:

"Come with us."

But nobody ever did.

Not because Lila was cruel.

Not because she was unfriendly.

And certainly not because she didn't want friends.

She simply wasn't allowed to have them.

Her partner, Mara, had always made sure of that.

"Friends aren't necessary," Mara would say whenever Lila mentioned someone from school.

"But everyone has friends," Lila would reply.

"You don't need everyone."

"But I want just one."

Mara would usually become quiet.

Then she would change the subject.

At first, Lila accepted it.

She thought perhaps Mara was simply being protective.

After all, Mara was the person who had stayed beside her when everyone else seemed to disappear.

Mara cooked for her.

Mara looked after her.

Mara made sure she was safe.

So Lila trusted her.

But as the years passed, something began to feel wrong.

Whenever Lila became close to someone, Mara found a reason to separate them.

When Lila became friends with a girl named Nessa, Mara suddenly decided that Lila had to change schools.

When Lila began talking to a boy named Evan during lunch, Mara told her that he was "bad news."

And when Lila once invited three girls from school to her house, Mara became furious.

"They cannot come here."

"Why?"

"Because I said so."

"But they're my friends."

Mara stared at her.

"No."

That single word ended the conversation.

The girls never came.

And Lila's friendship with them slowly disappeared.

Years went by.

Lila became quieter.

She stopped asking.

She stopped hoping.

She stopped telling people what she wanted.

She learned how to sit alone at lunch.

She learned how to walk home alone.

She learned how to spend weekends alone.

And eventually, she began telling herself that maybe she simply wasn't meant to have friends.

But one afternoon, everything changed — The Door

It happened on a rainy Thursday.

Lila was searching for an old notebook in Mara's room when she accidentally knocked a small wooden box from a shelf.

It hit the floor.

CRACK.

The lid opened.

Lila froze.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

She picked up the first photograph.

It showed Mara.

But Mara looked much younger.

Standing beside her was a woman Lila had never seen before.

Lila turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

"Mara and Elise — before everything changed."

Lila frowned.

"Elise?"

She picked up another photograph.

Then another.

There were pictures of Mara with the same woman.

Laughing.

Hugging.

Walking through a park.

And in several photographs, there was a little girl.

Lila stared at the girl.

Something about her face seemed familiar.

She searched through the box.

At the bottom was an envelope.

Her name was written on it.

LILA.

Her hands began to shake.

Why would Mara have an envelope with her name on it?

Lila slowly opened it.

Inside was a letter.

She began reading.

"If Lila ever discovers the truth, she deserves to know everything."

Lila's heart stopped.

She read the next line.

"Mara did not keep Lila away from everyone because she hated her."

Lila stared at the page.

Then she continued.

"She did it because she was afraid."

Lila's breathing became heavier.

Afraid of what?

She kept reading.

"There are people who are still looking for Lila."

Lila dropped the letter.

For several seconds, she couldn't move.

Someone was looking for her?

Who?

And why?

— The Truth Begins

The door suddenly opened.

Lila jumped.

Mara stood there.

Neither of them spoke.

Mara looked at the open box.

Then at the letter in Lila's hand.

Her face changed.

"Lila..."

"What is this?"

Mara didn't answer.

"What is this?" Lila repeated.

Mara slowly closed the door behind her.

"You weren't supposed to find that."

"Why?"

"Lila—"

"Why did you stop me from having friends?"

Mara looked down.

"Because I was protecting you."

"From who?"

Silence.

"Who is looking for me?"

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

"I didn't know how."

"You could have told me the truth!"

"I was scared!"

Lila stepped backward.

"You made me lonely."

"I know."

"You took away my friends."

"I know."

"You made me believe there was something wrong with me!"

Mara covered her face.

"I'm sorry."

Lila's anger suddenly became mixed with confusion.

"Then tell me."

Mara lowered her hands.

"The people looking for you aren't strangers."

Lila stared at her.

"They're connected to your past."

"My past?"

Mara nodded.

"There are things about your family you don't remember."

Lila's voice became quieter.

"What things?"

Mara looked toward the window.

"Your parents didn't simply disappear."

Lila's heart sank.

She had always been told that her parents were gone.

She had never been given details.

"They were hiding you."

"Why?"

"Because someone wanted to find you."

"Who?"

Mara hesitated.

Then she finally said the name.

"Dr. Varen."

Lila had never heard it before.

But the way Mara said it made the room feel colder.

"Who is he?"

"A man who believed your family knew something they shouldn't have known."

"What did they know?"

Mara looked at the old photographs.

"They discovered something."

"What?"

"Something that could change everything."

— The Missing Years

That night, Lila couldn't sleep.

She kept thinking about the letter.

She kept thinking about the photographs.

Most of all, she kept thinking about one sentence:

There are people who are still looking for Lila.

At midnight, she got out of bed.

She walked quietly into the hallway.

Mara's door was slightly open.

Lila could hear her talking on the phone.

"...she knows."

Lila froze.

Mara continued.

"She found the box."

A pause.

"No. I don't think she knows about the second location."

Lila's eyes widened.

Second location?

"What am I supposed to do?" Mara whispered.

Another pause.

Then Mara said:

"Keep her safe."

Lila stepped backward.

The floor creaked.

Mara immediately stopped talking.

"Lila?"

Lila ran.

She rushed back into her room and closed the door.

A few seconds later, Mara knocked.

"Lila?"

No answer.

"Lila, please open the door."

Lila sat on her bed.

For the first time, she realized something.

Mara hadn't just been hiding her from friends.

Mara had been hiding her from someone.

And perhaps the danger was much closer than Lila had imagined.

— The Second Location

The next morning, Lila made a decision.

She wasn't going to wait for Mara to tell her everything.

She needed answers.

While Mara was outside, Lila searched the house.

She checked the cupboards.

The drawers.

The old boxes.

The shelves.

Nothing.

Then she remembered Mara's conversation.

"The second location."

Lila searched Mara's room again.

Behind a painting, she discovered a small metal key.

She picked it up.

There was a number engraved on it.

17.

Lila remembered an old storage room beneath the house.

Nobody was allowed inside.

She walked downstairs.

The door was locked.

She tried the key.

CLICK.

The door opened.

Lila's heart pounded.

Inside were boxes covered in dust.

She switched on the light.

At the back of the room was a large metal cabinet.

On it was the number 17.

Lila inserted the key.

The cabinet opened.

Inside was a small device.

And beside it was another photograph.

Lila picked it up.

This time, she recognized the people.

Her parents.

But they were standing beside Mara.

And they were holding a baby.

Lila stared.

The baby was her.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

"If she ever asks why she was alone, tell her this: loneliness was never the punishment. It was the shield."

Lila's eyes filled with tears.

Suddenly, she understood.

Mara hadn't kept her away because she didn't love her.

She had done it because she believed that anyone close to Lila could become a target.

But that didn't make everything okay.

Lila still deserved the truth.

She still deserved a childhood.

She still deserved friends.

And now she was determined to find out what had happened to her parents.

— Someone Is Watching

That afternoon, Lila noticed a black car parked across the street.

It had been there before.

She remembered seeing it several times.

But she had never thought anything of it.

Now she did.

The car's engine started.

Then it slowly drove away.

Lila watched it disappear.

She ran to Mara.

"Mara!"

Mara turned.

"What happened?"

"Someone was watching the house."

Mara's face went pale.

"Did you see the car?"

"Yes."

"What did it look like?"

"Black. Dark windows."

Mara immediately locked the doors.

Then the windows.

Then she pulled the curtains.

Lila watched her.

"You knew this would happen."

Mara didn't answer.

"You knew they would find us."

Mara finally looked at her.

"I always knew."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to have at least a little normal life."

Lila shook her head.

"I didn't have a normal life."

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"You took my friends away."

"I thought I was saving you."

"You were."

Mara looked surprised.

"But you also hurt me."

Mara lowered her head.

"I know."

For the first time, Lila saw something she had never seen before.

Mara wasn't a cold person.

She was a frightened person.

A person who had spent years trying to protect someone she loved.

But fear had made her make terrible choices.

Lila walked toward her.

"I don't want to be alone anymore."

Mara looked at her.

"I know."

"I want friends."

Mara nodded slowly.

"You should have them."

"And I want the truth."

Mara took a deep breath.

"Then it's time."

What Really Happened

Mara sat beside Lila.

"Your parents discovered that Dr. Varen was using a secret research facility."

"What kind of research?"

"Human experiments."

Lila's eyes widened.

"They found evidence."

"What happened?"

"They tried to expose him."

"But he found them."

Mara nodded.

"They knew he would come after you next."

"So they hid me?"

"Yes."

"Where are they now?"

Mara became silent.

Lila's heart sank.

"You don't know."

"I know what happened that night."

"What?"

"Your parents tried to escape with you."

Mara looked down.

"They were stopped."

Lila's voice trembled.

"Are they dead?"

Mara didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know."

Lila stared at her.

"You don't know?"

"I saw the vehicle crash."

"But I never saw their bodies."

Lila stood.

"Then they could still be alive."

Mara nodded.

"That's what I've believed all these years."

A strange hope appeared in Lila's heart.

Her parents might still be alive.

And if they were...

She was going to find them.

t — A New Beginning

Weeks later, Lila returned to school.

This time, Mara didn't stop her from talking to anyone.

At lunch, Lila sat beneath a tree.

A girl approached.

"Can I sit here?"

Lila looked up.

She smiled.

"Sure."

The girl sat down.

"My name's Nessa."

Lila almost laughed.

Nessa.

The same name as the girl she had once been friends with years ago.

But this was someone else.

A new person.

A new beginning.

"So," Nessa said, "why do you always sit alone?"

Lila looked toward the school gates.

For a moment, she thought about everything that had happened.

Then she smiled.

"I used to think I had to."

Nessa frowned.

"Why?"

"It's a long story."

"Good. I like long stories."

Lila laughed.

It was the first real laugh she had had in years.

And for the first time, she understood something.

Being protected didn't mean being imprisoned.

Being loved didn't mean being controlled.

And being afraid didn't mean you had to remain alone forever.

Lila had spent years believing her loneliness was the end of her story.

She was wrong.

It had only been the beginning.

Because somewhere out there, her parents might still be alive.

Somewhere out there, Dr. Varen was still hiding.

And Lila was finally ready to discover the truth.

She wasn't the lonely girl anymore.

She was Lila.

And this time...

she wasn't running from the truth.

She was going to find it.
