CHAPTER ONE: THE GHOST MISSION
Rain hammered Washington, D.C.
At 2:17 in the morning, Chris crouched on the roof opposite an abandoned federal records building.
Black tactical gear.
Suppressed pistol.
Knife.
No S.H.I.E.L.D. logo.
No team.
Exactly how he preferred it.
Maria Hill’s voice entered his earpiece.
“You’re thirty seconds early.”
“I know.”
“You always say that.”
“Because I’m always early.”
Maria sighed.
“Fury said observe first.”
Chris stood.
“Fury says a lot.”
“Chris.”
“Relax.”
“I’ve known you since we were babies. I know what relax means when you say it.”
Chris smiled faintly.
“Then you know me well.”
“Unfortunately.”
He crossed to the building through a maintenance roof and entered silently.
The place was officially abandoned.
It wasn’t.
Five armed men occupied the lower archive floor.
A sixth watched the stairs.
Chris disabled the lookout without making a sound.
Then he listened.
“Transfer at sixty-three percent.”
“Pierce wants everything.”
Chris stopped.
Alexander Pierce.
Former S.H.I.E.L.D. director.
World Security Council.
Nick Fury’s mentor.
Why was Pierce connected to an illegal midnight data transfer?
Chris activated his camera.
Portable servers.
Classified files.
Then one black folder came into view.
The label hit him harder than a bullet.
PROJECT BLACKWELL
Below it:
SUBJECT: CHRISTOPHER — AGE SIX
Chris went completely still.
Maria saw through his camera.
“Chris…”
“What the hell is that?”
“I don’t know.”
“You knew?”
“No. I swear.”
He believed her.
One man opened the folder.
A photograph appeared.
Six-year-old Chris standing beside a younger Nick Fury.
Chris knew that day.
Fury had told him that was when he rescued him.
The file used another word.
ACQUISITION.
Chris’s jaw tightened.
The men continued packing.
One said:
“By morning Fury will have bigger problems.”
That was enough.
Maria whispered:
“Chris, do not engage.”
Chris drew his pistol.
“Too late.”
He dropped into the room.
The first man went down before anyone reacted.
Chris broke the second man’s rifle grip, drove him into a filing cabinet, and swept another attacker off his feet.
A fourth man landed a punch.
Chris barely moved.
“Finally.”
Three seconds later the man was unconscious.
The civilian archivist backed away.
“Please.”
Chris took the Blackwell file.
“Name.”
“Elliot Crane.”
“Who hired you?”
“I don’t know.”
Chris stepped closer.
Crane corrected himself immediately.
“Pierce’s people.”
Chris opened the file.
Psychological evaluations.
Pain tolerance.
Combat aptitude.
Behavioral conditioning.
Then:
PEER BOND: HILL, MARIA — STRONG
Another line:
FURY ATTACHMENT: SEVERE — POTENTIAL THREAT TO PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Chris stared.
They had monitored him.
Maria.
Fury.
His entire childhood.
Crane whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to see that.”
Chris looked up.
“Starting to hear that a lot.”
Maria suddenly interrupted.
“Chris, move. Now.”
“Why?”
“Unregistered S.H.I.E.L.D. tactical units surrounding building.”
Chris looked toward windows.
Black SUVs.
Agents.
S.H.I.E.L.D. insignia.
But Maria had no record of deployment.
Cleanup.
Chris grabbed Crane.
“You’re coming.”
“Why?”
“Because they’re here to kill you.”
“That isn’t comforting.”
“Wasn’t meant to be.”
Maria remotely blew open a maintenance route.
Chris fought through the first assault team, dragging Crane with him.
He escaped into an alley where a black sedan came sideways through rain.
Passenger door opened.
Natasha Romanoff leaned across.
“Get in.”
Chris threw Crane inside.
Then himself.
Natasha accelerated.
“You look terrible.”
“Nice to see you too.”
“Blood on my seat?”
“Not mine.”
Crane raised a trembling hand.
“Some is mine.”
Natasha glanced back.
“Who’s this?”
Chris looked at the Blackwell folder.
“Problem.”
They reached a Level Ten safehouse.
Nick Fury waited inside.
Chris entered.
Said nothing.
Dropped the folder onto the table.
PROJECT BLACKWELL.
Fury looked down.
Then at Chris.
Recognition.
Chris saw it instantly.
“You know what this is.”
Fury remained silent.
Chris stepped closer.
“I was six.”
“I know.”
“You told me you found me.”
“I did.”
“The file says acquired.”
Maria and Natasha watched.
Chris’s voice lowered.
“Did you raise me like a son?”
Fury stared at him.
Chris continued:
“Or did S.H.I.E.L.D. build me like a weapon?”
For the first time Chris could remember—
Nick Fury had no immediate a
