Chapter 1
I live in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.
I love this place. To me, there is nothing more beautiful than this quiet, cozy little corner where life seems to move a little slower than it does in the big city.
Small houses with spacious yards are hidden among tall trees, green lawns, and peaceful streets. In the mornings, you can hear birds singing, and in the evenings, the windows of the houses glow with a warm golden light. Sometimes, it feels as though time moves a little differently here.
There are small cafés, family-owned shops, schools, and cozy parks where people walk with their children and dogs. In summer, the air is filled with the smell of fresh grass and flowers, and after it rains, the streets become especially quiet.
Autumn changes everything. The trees turn shades of gold and red, creating an almost cinematic atmosphere. It feels as though every season tells its own little story.
Despite being so close to the busy city of Atlanta, the suburbs have a rhythm of their own.
Here, neighbors know each other. Familiar faces pass by on the streets, and behind every house, there seems to be a small story of its own.
And there was a story hidden inside our house, too.
I just didn’t know yet how much it was going to change my life.
My name is Eileen. I’m fourteen years old.
I was named after a heroine from a novel by Theodore Dreiser. When I learned the story behind my name, I always found myself thinking about that girl. In the book, she was described as beautiful, bright, and cheerful, with golden hair.
I was bright too. Cheerful. Outgoing. I could easily get along with people.
The only difference was that I never had golden hair.
For a long time, my life followed its usual routine: school, classmates, friends, social media, and all the ordinary worries of being a teenager. At some point, I entered high school, and it felt like I was stepping into a completely new chapter of my life.
But I had never been the easiest person when it came to getting close to people.
It was difficult for me to get used to someone. I couldn’t easily trust people, let them get close to me, or feel completely comfortable around them. As I grew older, it became even harder.
But despite everything, I never felt lonely at home.
My mother raised me on her own, but I never lacked anything.
Especially love.
Everyone in our house loved me in their own special way. They cared about me, worried about me, and always tried to give me the best they could.
Maybe that was why, for a long time, I believed that my little world was strong enough to withstand anything. I thought nothing truly important could ever destroy it.
I lived an ordinary life.
Probably even a little boring.
Home. High school. Thoughts about the future. Tutoring sessions. Friends. Social media. Endless plans and endless attempts to figure out what I wanted to become.
I changed my future career so many times that I eventually stopped counting.
At first, I wanted to become a doctor.
Then I became interested in something completely different. I wanted to become a military doctor. It seemed like an interesting and meaningful profession to me.
But my family was completely against the idea.
Eventually, I decided to connect my future with languages.
And once I had finally made my decision, I began preparing for it intensely. Studying slowly started taking up more and more of my life. I thought about university, about my future, about what my life would look like a few years from then.
I thought I more or less knew where I was going.
But I didn’t know that, along with preparing for my future, someone would enter my life who would interfere with all my plans.
Just a little...
Or maybe much more than that.
I’ll say this right away: even though all of this is already over, I don’t regret any of it.
Because some people enter our lives completely unexpectedly.
Sometimes they come when we least expect them.
And sometimes, one person can change everything we thought was already decided.
He and I had lived in the same neighborhood since childhood.
More than that, our parents had known each other for years.
You would think that, under those circumstances, we should have met at least once.
But we didn’t know each other.
Every day, I walked to school along a road that passed near his house. Sometimes I walked past it several times a day.
And I never saw him.
I didn’t even know someone like him existed in our neighborhood.
It was as if we lived in the same place, but in completely different worlds.
I was busy with school, my friends, and my plans. By that time, I already had a few boys who liked me. They tried to get closer to me, showed interest, and made little attempts to win my attention.
And he had his own life.
His own thoughts.
His own goals.
His own sport.
Only later did I find out that he was an athlete.
And the strangest part was that neither of us even knew the other existed.
We each had our own life.
He had his.
I had mine.
And everything was fine.
Nothing hinted that anything was about to change.
Nothing hinted that we were about to meet.
The first time I heard about him, I was twelve or thirteen. I don’t remember exactly.
I was standing with my friends near a small shop when suddenly it seemed like the whole neighborhood had come alive.
Music was playing. A lot of people had gathered. Everyone was talking, laughing, and discussing something.
It was loud and exciting, and I had absolutely no idea what was going on.
I looked at my friends and asked:
“What’s happening? Why is it so noisy here? What are they celebrating?”
One of my friends answered:
“There’s a guy who lives here. He won some really important competition. Everyone is celebrating.”
That was the first time I learned that someone like him lived in our neighborhood.
But honestly, I didn’t think much of it.
I didn’t even know what he looked like.
If he had walked past me that day, I wouldn’t have recognized him.
To me, he was just some boy from our neighborhood who had won a competition.
We watched what was happening for a little while, and then we simply left to go play.
Back then, I couldn’t even imagine that this athlete would one day change my life beyond recognition.
That someone I had learned about completely by chance would become so important to me.
That one day, he would become my world.
And, if I may use the expression, my air.
But I didn’t know any of that then.
Years passed after the day I first heard about him.
I knew there was an athlete living in our neighborhood, someone the whole neighborhood had once celebrated.
But that was all.
For years, I never saw him even once.
Even though I walked past his house every single day.
Sometimes several times a day.
And still, we never crossed paths.
Eventually, I even forgot about him.
The image of someone I had never actually seen disappeared from my thoughts.
I continued living my ordinary life. I studied, spent time with my friends, made plans, and thought about my future.
I thought it had just been a random little story from my childhood.
I was wrong.
Because God decided to remind me of him.
And this time, everything was going to be different.
I didn’t know yet that very soon, the person I had somehow failed to notice for all those years would find his way into the very center of my life.
I didn’t know that our two completely different worlds would one day collide.
And I certainly didn’t know that, from that moment on, my story would truly begin.
